Ten Things About Tonight's Game Week 6: NE 43 KC 40

Ten Things About Tonight’s Game Week 6: NE 43 KC 40

10. Looks like the 1972 Dolphins can concentrate on putting the voodoo hex on the Rams now. All of us agree that 5-1 is a great start. I’m very happy about many things and hopping mad about other things.

So let’s talk about good, bad and ugly:

9. The Good: After being down 24-9 at halftime, the team could have mailed it in. KC scores 31 points in the second half and loses. Where last week’s win over the Jags was credited to the defense for forcing four Bortles picks and a fumble, this week the defense was the goat. Offense and Special Teams showed tremendous heart to claw back into the lead in the fourth quarter. Hunt had 185 all purpose yards and a TD. Hill had 142 yards and three TDs…and could have had four if Mahomes would have hit him on our second drive. Kelce and Watkins were somewhat quiet, but did have catches. Mahomes set a Chiefs record for throwing for 300 yards in his last five games. Last person to do that in the NFL was Aaron Rodgers.

8. Special Teams were all good. Toub gets a 96 yard kickoff return. Buttkicker is perfect on all field goal and PAT attempts. On defense, Lucas played best of all the D-Backs. He had four tackles and six assists. Zombo played OK filling in for Houston. He didn’t embarrass himself. Devey did an OK job filling in for Morse who was concussed on a borderline dirty hit by Hightower. KC had 446 yards of total offense, which will win a game for you 9 out of 10 times.

7. The Bad: Jesus, where to I begin with this defense? Sorry, but I despise Grandpa Bob Sutton. Defense gives up 43 points. That’s gutter awful. Defense gives up an even 500 yards of offense to New England. They gave up a 100 yard rusher - They made Michel look like the second coming of Curtis Martin. Brady only had one TD pass, but he’s the one who ran for a TD this week, not Mahomes. And on his TD, Speaks had a major fail not to pull his ass down. That pretty much negated the one good play he had earlier to force a Brady fumble. Speaks looks doughey and slow. He either needs to bulk up and become a DT, or get his ass in better condition like Dee Ford did, and get better core strength. Dee Ford did absolutely NOTHING tonight against New England’s second string tackle. Chris Jones disappeared in the second half. For the most part, the inside pass rush was pathetic. On the fumble they forced on Brady he had over five seconds to throw the ball. You simply can’t give him that much time. He will beat you, yes he will beat you. Hey Bob, he beat you.

6. Somebody asked me yesterday what I thought would happen in tonight's game. I said “Pats will run for five or six yards on first down. Our linebackers will look terrible in pass coverage on backs out of the backfield, and if things get tight for Tommy, the refs will bail him out with DPI calls." All three of those things happened to make me look like frickin’ Nostradamus. Hey Veach, WTF??? I though our draft and free agency was all about STOPPING THE RUN? Pats had 173 yards rushing. That’s flatly pathetic. Hitchens and Ragland are both awful in pass coverage on backs. They’re always getting beat on little swing passes. Fuller is showing he’s not a true starting corner. He’s average to less than average at corner. Nelson and Scandrick were both terrible. Both had DPIs. Pats were 7 for 13 on third down. That’s on Grandpa Bob. And the final kill shot to Gronk, Gramps rushes three guys and puts a guy they brought in off the street a couple days ago (Shaw) to cover Gronk one on one, when everybody in the damn stadium knew Gronk was the main target. How can you allow that kind of a coverage scheme at a critical point in the game like that? Should be grounds for dismissal on that play alone.

5. The Ugly: I can see why Ron Parker was available after Atlanta cut him. Gronk trucked him. You can’t tackle a guy like that high. You have to cut his knees out from under him. Kelce lept a guy. Gronk stiff armed Parker and ran for another 10 yards. Gronk was by far the better of the two TE’s in this game.

4. Pats were penalized for zero yards. Let me say that again. Pats…no DPI, no holding. Only thing they got called for was an illegal shift, and it was declined by KC. They had one OPI called, but it was offset by a Bullshit penalty on Fuller for defensive holding. There was one punt in the game. So this was not as ugly as the “No Punt Game” in the playoffs back in the day against the Colts and Five Head, but I kept thinking in the fourth quarter the last team with the ball would win. Yep. That's exactly what happened. I could smell it coming.

3. Hightower is a dirty player. His hit on Morse was unnecessary and away from the play. I hope the O-Line remembers that hit and can pay his ass back if we meet these guys in the playoffs down the road. He should be on the bounty list. I guess the last part of the "ugly" was we had to play this game without our two highest paid defensive players, Houston and Berry. They both played in the New England game last year that we won. This year, we get nothing from either of them. Enjoy cashing those game checks this week fellas.

2. Ultimately the difference in the game was Mahomes slow start. He missed two guys for TDs early -Hunt and Hill-, and his second pick right before the half was really the game difference. If we get seven or three on that possession, we may have won this game. Not blaming this loss on Mahomes, he got the team the lead back in the fourth quarter. But if he comes out a little sharper, we may have won this game by 14 points.

1. So, live and learn. I think Mahomes and Hill both shined in front of a National TV audience, and losing to the Pats -when you have to beat Brady and the Zebras- is a tall order. He put the fear of Jesus in them, and it’ll make it so much sweeter when we beat them in a game that counts -the AFC Playoffs. But please God, can we put Sutton into John Knox Village where he belongs? Just give him a gold watch and a big case of pudding and get him the HELL out of Arrowhead? I won’t be able to handle another 20 point playoff collapse this year. We must, MUST draft or find actual defensive help next year. A couple linebackers who can cover backs and slants would be a start; a safety that can cover and come up in run support would be like, oh, having Eric Berry, and get a corner who can figure out how to turn his head in pass coverage. At least the Bengals got demoralized by AB and Rapistburger, and our guys will be pissed off now that they lost a game. I expect they may have more urgency and fire this week in taking it out on the Bengals. Like Lou Brown said in Major League when Wild Thing gave up the Grand Salami, “Let’s see how the kid reacts.”

Man, it's been a long time since we've had a troll this sad.

Thanks, little bitch. You've made me laugh tonight. It's appreciated. I now leave you with the failure that is your sad and pointless existence.

Really came down to we scored too quick on our last touchdown to Tyreek Hill but how do you not go ahead and score because you don't know if you get the opportunity to score a touchdown on the same drive. WTF do you do if your Tyreek slide at the 15 have the offense take time off the clock getting a first down then punch it in that would still have left a minute on the clock for the Pats to do something with to end the game on a field goal.

Disagree. Came down to shitty play by the defense. Guess it doesn't really matter at this point.

It came down to Mahomes being nervous for an entire half...he was over-throwing everyone.

He missed 2-3 easy TDs to start the game and would have forced NE to change their strategy.

This is his "growing pains" stage...putting up 40 in NE. Could be a lot worse...

KC had $35 million worth of defense watching the game in sweat pants....Chiefs need to draft some ILB with speed. Ragland/Hitchens coupled together are just lethargic.

This is about as optimistic as I can be after a loss that was dictated by a player worried about getting a call for sacking a QB. That's just a sad state of affairs... and cost KC 4 points.

was Mahomes nervous or getting some pressure and not able to step up in the pocket. I haven't seen what I call nervous yet. Maybe amped up

He missed 2 touchdowns because the Pats had a man right in his face

Don't pressure Mahomes to the side, get pressure up the middle

Works pretty well against all QB not named Vick. Hard to create that pressure, though

It's going be nice have back to back home games for a change. Showtime is going put on a show at Arrowhead and Cinci game is flexed to another SNF game it's good for him to get exposure in the bright lights and just get use to it like he belongs.

This was a stepping stone for a bigger stage.

While the Speaks play was bad, everyone seems to forget that the refs called us for Defensive holding on the play....so even if he makes the sack, the Pats have 1st and goal on the 1...do you really think the defense is stopping them there?

I posted a stat where NE is 2 to 1 in critical penalties that result in influencing outcomes...meaning every team gets twice the penalties. This is well know by the other teams in the AFCE...and we saw it first hand when Manning played.

Their defense had zero penalties called...ZERO against the fastest offense in the NFL.

I'm no fan of Grandpa Bob at all....but he's working with nothing out there. No Justin Houston, no Eric Berry, no Earl Thomas (lol), no Daniel Sorenson (you may laugh, but he's better than what was out there tonight). Part of me wants Berry to shit or get off the pot, but I know if we rush it then he'll be out for another year and a half....so I trust the Chiefs medical staff to make a sound decision. I'm sorry, I can't put this all on Grandpa Bob tonight. He was trying to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. It's no cure-all by any means, but I'm hoping KC is calling up Arizona to see about Patrick Peterson right now. This is a Super Bowl caliber team held back by a Pop-Warner defense, but it CAN improve through getting healthy and giving up future assets to make one big trade.

We came in shorthanded defensively and Mahomes was looking like the Mahomes of Weeks 1-4 in the second half. I know moral victories don't count in the standings, but I'm not too upset about losing on a last second field goal in Foxboro in primetime. The schedule gets considerably easier after next week's duel with Cincinnati and we have a fantastic opportunity to come out of the hellish part of our schedule at 6-1 with an easier road ahead of us (vs DEN, at CLE, vs ARI, OAK (x2)) There are a few landmines in there (at LAR, vs BAL, at SEA). With Mahomes in tow though, I firmly believe that for the first time since I became a Chiefs fan in 1993 that we are the ones to be feared and not the other way around.

We'll get back on track next Sunday night and Mahomes will lead the way (even if the defense won't).

EDIT: Jordan Lucas looked good. I hope he sticks and doesn't go "Marcus Cooper" on us.
