The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

The Miami Dolphins did the right thing as well. Matt Ryan threw too many INTs his senior year. Too risky the safe pick is the LT and a QB at the top of the 2nd.

This.

Reaching for players above where they should be picked isn't a winning strategy.

Good GMs trade down to the spot where they can still select that player and pick upmore picks tio help you.

That is what Baalke has done. Thats what Belichick does. Thats what Jimmy Johnson did. Thats what Bill Walsh did.

Little known fact: The 49ers were attempting to move down to the 9th, 10th, or 11th pick to take Aldon Smith so they could get the same player and accumulate more picks because they knew the other teams wouldn't take him. They couldn't get a deal so took him at 7.

If the Chiefs were really smart they could trade out of the top pick and try to land Geno where they think he might be projected to go and pick up alot more picks to fill more holes. The CBA makes that trade much easier than it used to be.

The draft is an art. Panicking and taking guys way above where they should be picked is an Al Davis move.

You could argue they stuck to their board. It's not risk, it's value.

That is equating Geno Smith to Matt Ryan, which I don't think is fair to Ryan. If Matt Ryan was in this draft, we wouldn't be having this conversation, no?

There were also rumors about how Haley and the Chiefs scouts loved Kaepernick but Pioli was too stubborn to take him.....

Clearly the 9ers weren't alone in thinking that the guy could be groomed into a legit QB.

Matt Ryan is overrated.

But he's white and played at Boston College. Threw 19 interceptions his senior season but as QBs go, he's as safe a prospect as they get.

That's why he can't win the big game despite surrounded by superior talent.

**** Matt Ryan.

Taking a bad player above or below where he should be picked, doesn't make him a better player.

Just because a guy is slotted to go number 15 doesn't mean he has to go there.

Say the Cheifs take Geno at 1 and he busts. Where does taht put us? We've won like 27 games the past 6 years. Can it get any worse? Really?
