From time to time, both online and in the real world, I run across someone who makes some grammatical mistake that annoys the hell out of me. I'm a nice guy most times, so I don't typically call people out on such errors. However, I do feel the need to vent somewhere, and perhaps help some poor unfortunate soul. So here it is. A thread to gripe about others' grammatical errors without seeming like an ass.

One rule: if you post an error in this thread, be sure to explain WHY it is wrong rather than just point out the fact that it's wrong. It's a learning experience and all that.

THIS! It really bugs me, but what bugs me more is when people are very inconsistent in using it.

For example, someone might say the following:

I like apple's but I love oranges.

GRRR at least pick a way and stick with it!

Also I really hate how about 25% of people don't know the difference between your and you're.

I have no clue why but i always spell definitely wrong.. i always use spell checker on it.

The phrase "I could care less" doesn't make sense. At least not the way people use it. Technically, that phrase means something to the effect of "I can think of other topics that would be less interesting than the one you mentioned," which implies that it's actually a mildly interesting topic at worst.

I read up on this once because I didn't think it made sense either. I read that "I could care less" was a sort of American corruption and mockery of the phrase "I couldn't care less." I don't recall where I read that, however.

it's not really an error. But I've worked with people who say "really" with that high pitched annoying voice when they see something they don't agree with.

Yea, so you'll need to lighten up. Your acting like little girl's. Supposably this is the funnest place to talk about the Cheifs. Our you inferring that their isn't nothing more important than grammer? Irregardless, I could care less. I'll end with a quote; "Were talkin about grammer, not the Chiefs, GRAMMER".

There is no such thing as the word irregardless. The word regardless means "without regard." So, adding the prefix ir- to the beginning of it basically makes the word mean "without without regard." It doesn't make sense.

Thankfully, the fix for this one is easy. Any time you think you want to use the word irregardless, don't. Just say regardless, and you'll be fine.

A good friend of mine was an English major and this is one of his major pet peeves. Which, in my group of friends, of course, means we say it as often as possible while making sure to look at him (even if we're talking to someone else) when we say it.

Your and you're and its and it's, and they're, their, there are mildly irritating, but I usually don't let grammatical errors bug me.

To the degree they bug me, it's because it (seems) so very simple.

Your, its and their are possessives. If you're talking about something being OWNED, that's what you want.

You're, it's and they're are contractions for TWO words. You are, it is and they are, respectively. If you can't change teh sentence to "you are", "it is" and "they are", then these aren't the words you want.

And "there" is a place. Something you can point at. If you can't point to it, then this isn't the word you want.

This thread is an effort to relieve the irritation at grammatical mistakes in other threads so that they can remain focused on Chiefs (or other) discussions. If you are here to talk about the Chiefs, I'm afraid you have stumbled into the wrong thread. But feel free to rant if you'd like.

Heh...this is why our society is headed downhill. I barely even acknowledged all the obviously intentional mistakes in there.
