Southeastern road trip sightseeing ideas

I'm doing a road trip from South Dakota to Florida this week to haul some stuff to our daughter. I've got all next week open for the return trip and am looking for sightseeing suggestions along the way.

My route down is through St. Louis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Atlanta way. My way back will be dictated by where I decide to stop.

I'm definitely interested in Civil War sites and am planning on stopping at Lookout Mountain and Chickamaugwa. I'm also thinking of diverting a bit and going through Charleston so I can see Fort Sumter.

I'm not stuck on just Civil War stops, all ideas are welcome. Well mostly the you can't miss this ideas.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Chattanooga is a super cool town. As is Nashville.

Here in Atlanta if you’re a foodie eat some local joints in town. Once you’re south of Atlanta is boring as shit until you hit the beach.

I was just in Chickamauga last year. The museum was okay, but I wasn't wowed by touring the battlefield so much.

With a two-hour detour you could go to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. It's worth seeing.

I really like touring old mansions, and I want to go to Andrew Jackson's home in Nashville. I went there as a small child but don't remember much.

Chattanooga is my favorite “wish I could find a good job here” city in America right now. Crazy pretty, small town vibe and a few hours from Nashville and Atlanta.

Nashville is the best spot in America right now for a Friday or Saturday night to have some drinks and walk around. I am not a country music fan, but those bars are so dang fun.
