Better Call Saul

As I am sure many of y'all already know, a spinoff of "Breaking Bad" titled "Better Call Saul" will be airing in 2014. This is going to be a prequel to Breaking Bad and will be based on the character of Saul Goodman from "Breaking Bad."

I, for one, will be watching. I'm sure the majority of all of you other "Breaking Bad" fans will be as well. Might as well get the discussion going sooner rather than later.

So... what are your hopes, expectations and/or concerns with the show? Here are some of mine:

Hopes: I hope to see Saul do his thing in the courtroom. I hope to see strong, unique supporting characters. I hope to see Breaking Bad foreshadowing. I hope he has an intriguing paralegal and/or assistant. I hope to see Breaking Bad characters such as Fring, Mike, etc...whoever. I hope the show kicks ass.

Expectations: I don't expect it to be as good as "Breaking Bad" (because nothing else is, really), but I expect it to be good since Vince Gilligan is writing. I somewhat expect it to have an even balance of comedy and drama...since Saul undeniably provides a substantial amount of comedic relief in "Breaking Bad." I expect to see "courtroom Saul." I expect the "Breaking Bad" references and character cameos to be less than what I hope. If it isn't even a fraction as good as "Breaking Bad," I expect it to be better than 95% of everything else on TV, since there is some shitty shit on TV these days.

Concerns: I'd be a liar if I were to say that I didn't think this show has potential of flopping and certainly failing to meet the presumed high expectations of the audience. Don't get me wrong, I think it will be good... but I think it COULD suck if not executed properly. My main concern is Saul ultimately proving himself to be a "little dab will do ya" type of character, which would lead to a show centered around his character not working out. I am hoping that the character of Saul will not be so over-used and constantly over the top, that he becomes annoying to me, thus ruining his character for me altogether... Not saying I think this will be how it goes down...just saying I think there is a CHANCE of this being the case, which prompts me to believe that a strong supporting cast is VITAL in terms of the amount of success/quality this show will accumulate. All in all, I don't think VG will steer us in an unfortunate direction though...I think they'll pull it off.

On top of that, HHM doesn't exactly value hard work or integrity. Look at what happened to Kim Wexler when the Kettlemans irrationally left. A non-one who sucks the penis of a boss would see the deal she secured for them and think she did a tremendous job, because 16 months in a county jail for 1.6 million of embezzlement is pretty damned solid in an Enron climate. Furthermore, they certainly showed no qualms towards ****ing the lynchpin of the firm over.

An anesthesiologist isn't the face of the surgical team. Doesn't mean you want one that takes shortcuts in his duties on yours.

The practice of law isn't like a factory where supervisors can tell at a glance is workers are slacking off, and can inspect all goods for quality control as they leave the facility. Attorneys, even drones, have a great deal of autonomy in the execution of their duties, bound by their oath and their character.

But by all means, if you want to watch the show as a battle between white hats and black hats, more power to you.

I don't think anybody is denying that Chuck has a point. But it's also a complete rationalization on his part. Whether he wants to admit it to himself or not, he betrayed Jimmy for his own selfish reasons.

Jimmy can be an antihero and still get legitimately ****ed over.

Did Jimmy take shortcuts with the Sandpiper case, or was he diving into dumpsters to get shredded documents? Was he going to ridiculous lengths to get his PD cases good deals when the prosecutors couldn't remember them, or wasn't he?

Jimmy could have gotten $150K just by telling Nacho about the Kettlemans, and he could have split the full load of cash with Mike, but he didn't do those things?

Jimmy's issues have never been within the actual practice of law but a desperate attempt to gain clients (or help his friend/love interest regain them) because his brother was shut out and he was denied a job out of law school.

That's the point of Mike's speech last night. Jimmy may become a criminal lawyer, but he's not a bad person, and Chuck and Howard may not be criminals, but they are viperous bastards.

Chuck is the guy talking about how nasty pit bulls are while poking his with a stick hourly and saying, "See? Look how vicious they are."

To Chuck's POV attorneys, like surgeons or anesthesiologists, are not in a line of work where an great job on one task erases a shady job on another. You don't get to scam insurance or arrange publicity stunts because you did great work for some old people getting scammed the week before.

The may be conning us, but the actors in the roundtable I posted earlier were vehement that Jesse would not show up soon, because where they are now, he's 11 or 12 yo.

I was thinking of all the scenarios that could occur, for Jimmy to fall from grace, and Chuck betraying him certainly was one of tbhem but it was more in the back of my mind. If you look through the previous comments, I think most people on here were thinking HHM would steal the case from Jimmy, but it would be more of Howard and the company's doing, not Chuck's betrayal. Not mind blowing or anything, but very surprising and good story telling.
