Plus, all the Germans speak English, except for about 10 German words, just to remind everybody that they're German.

I got on a Hogans Heros watching kick not long ago, hungry for nostalgia and did some random googling about it...Crosby basically ordered that show into existence, he wanted a patriotic military comedy specifically because of Vietnam

Andy Griffith was in a movie called No Time For Seargents. I believe I heard that somewhere that they based the show on that movie. Saw the movie a couple of times.

John Banner who played Schultz and Robert Clary who played LeBeau were European Jews too, and both managed to live through WWII. Banner escaped Austria to the USA as Hitler was invading countries. Clary survived the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

Leon Askin, who played General Burkhalter (Klink's boss) was Jewish and escaped Vienna in 1940 to the USA where he joined the Army Air Corps.

Howard Caine who played Major Hockstetter (head of the SS) was a jew from Nashville who served in the Navy in the Pacific in WWII.

There were lots of Jewish actors in that show.

Bob Crane (Col Hogan) did not serve in WWII but did two years in the Connecticut Army National Guard in the late 1940's. One last tidbit: Bob Crane was a professional quality drummer. He played in bands. He's playing the drums in the opening credits for Hogans Heroes.

Oh, I saw that movie once. You're right - Andy was very Gomer-like in it. It's interesting that Andy crossed from that to his show, and then Jim Nabors crossed back.

I think we need a Roy Stuart thread in the Pictures sub.

It's certainly not what you would expect from a search on that name.

RIP Jim Nabors.

The Andy Griffith Show really wanted Jack Prince to be a regular because of his acting and singing talent. He appeared in a few episodes as Rafe Hollister (among other characters), but declined a larger role. He was much more successful on Broadway and as a singer. Andy Griffith saw Jim Nabors doing a comedy bit in Santa Monica and signed him to the show. History was made.

Unrelated to Jim Nabors, I found it very implausible that Andy Griffith never accepted the advances of Charlene Darling. She was adorable.
