Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

Theon's location is a question mark on that map right now. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I was kind of hoping for a clue.

Man, this is my favorite show on TV. That scene with Dany just owning everything at the end was so awesome.

And those books. Oh my God. I'm 3/4 through Clash of Kings, trying to catch up to the show. I think. I love not knowing what's going to happen but at some point I'm going to have to surpass the show. Either way, this is my favorite show on TV and definitely one of my favorite reads. Except those Catelyn chapters....

I was out of town on business last weekend through Saturday, so I just watched last week's and this week's back to back. Holy shit, this season is epic.

That was the first real episode with Varys this season. Both his scenes, particularly the monologue with Tyrion with the box reveal at the end of it, were great.

I was waiting for somebody to kill that asshole Craster. Too bad it had to come at the expense of Jeor Mormont getting stabbed in the back and total chaos for the Night's Watch. The Mormont death was no real surprise considering the name of the episode, though.

Jaime's depressed about the hand. Yeah, that sucks. Time to learn to fight with your left hand, I guess.

I don't know who that guy with no eye is in the Brotherhood without Banners, but I think he might just have some trouble beating the Hound in a fight for that trial by combat.

Theon's gotten himself into even more ****ed up shit somehow with a crazy guy who released him and saved him from rape one day only to apparently bring him back to get tortured some more. At least Theon expressed some remorse for all the bullshit he pulled last season and realized Balon hates him. So somewhat on the right track...maybe. Except for that crazy guy.

And of course, it doesn't get any more badass than what Daenerys did in the final scene there. Epic takeover. I didn't consider just handing over the dragon and having it burn him with fire to pieces, but perhaps I should have. One of the best scenes in the entire series probably.

Wasn't that guy a Targarian? I thought that's the name they called him...

Nope, he's this guy (apparently part of a vassal house that fought for Robert and Ned): http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Beric_Dondarrion

And I think he may be in some trouble if he thinks he can beat the Hound head-to-head.

Awesome episode from start to finish! Especially the finish!

Only thing that would have made the last 20 minutes better was if Mormont had choked the life out of the SOB that stabbed him from behind like a wuss. Sam getting Gilly out and on the run was good. I'm looking forward to that part and seeing where it goes next week.

Loved Varys in this episode. His wizard in a box revenge was cool, and something that wasn't in the books, though most of his dialogue in that scene was straight out of the books. Even his scene with Roz was enlightening, and any scene with the Queen of Thorns is enjoyable, she is a feisty one! Varys hasn't been seen much this season, but he was featured in this episode, and he delivered well.

Loved the scene with Tywin and Cersei. The actor playing Tywin may be the best one on the show (which is saying something). He is sooo perfect in that role. Tywin summing up what all book readers come to realize eventually, Cersei is just not as smart as she thinks she is. Margery is eating her for lunch on the show right now, which is funny. Watching Margery control and manipulate Joffrey with such ease, and much to Cersei's chagrin, is pretty entertaining.

The scene with Jaime and Brienne was excellent too. I really felt sorry for Jaime (sister banging, Ned stabbing, Bran throwing guy that he is). He saved Brienne, he's loyal to his family, and there may be another side of Jaime starting to come out, especially as he deals with the loss of his sword hand. The dynamic between him and Brienne has been well played, both actors doing a good job with those roles.

I liked the Brotherhood scene. Short, but spelled it all out quickly and effectively. Made it clear who Beric Dondarrion is, and what the role of the Brotherhood Without Banners is, and their affiliation with Melisandre's red god/lord of light. Arya (the bravest one of all) accusing the Hound of killing the butcher boy was right out of the books. She is ready to strike one name from her death-wish list! Can Beric beat the Hound?

The Bran scene may have been the only throw away scene in the episode as it didn't add much, but it was creepy and his dream scenes are always enjoyable.

I also really enjoyed the Theon scenes and how the little bastard screwed so badly with Theon's mind by letting him escape, appearing to help him, and then sneaking him right back into his torture room. Nicely played! Theon's heartbreaking realization that he chose wrong, and Ned was his true father, was a great scene too. Plus he spilled to that guy that Bran and Rickon are alive.

And of course Dany!! That was one of my favorite scenes in the books, and they did just a fantastic job with it on the show. "Khaleesi Kicks Ass!" should be the headline today! The scene of her army marching out with the dragons flying overhead was the perfect way to end a great episode.

Man that was a great episode, I watched it last night as I was falling asleep and there were so many rad moments that I didn't actually fall asleep. I'm going to watch it again right now.

I think it might be my favorite episode, and that has a lot to do with Dany actually doing something badass for once and me not being completely bored with her storyline.

OK, what's the deal with Pod? Is that just some humorous side gag, or is he something much more than he appears? I mean, the previous episode, it was funny. But, then for Varys to take a particular interest in it, made me think this is something a bit more significant. When one combines this with the fact that he also saved Tyrion on the battlefield, I can't help but think he has been placed there. Possible by Varys? He knew of the assassination attempt?
