Deadspin Dead(ish)

I don't know who closely anyone's been following this, but Deadspin (along with CP and The Ringer) was my go to for sports-related content.

Their new VC overlords issued a "Stick to Sports" memo last Monday, the writers and editors revolted, and basically everyone quit.

Deadspin was decidedly left of center, and I doubt many of you will mourn its passing. They generally advocated for players over the NCAA and pro teams, pushed back on the narrative that stadiums are good investments for municipalities, and offered the kind of analysis the ESPNs of the world can't perform due to their broadcast deals.

But their football content was very good and it's (essentially) gone now and that sucks.

People aren't going to keep going to Deadspin because of branding. There are 80 billion sites that "stick to sports", there was one deadspin.

Deadspin is going to wither away and die while someone else fills the void.

Whether or not you agree with Deadspin's politics, vulture capitalists are the absolute worst. Pray one of them never acquires your company or a company that makes a product or provides a service you like. They just leverage the company into debt, enrich themselves while bleeding it to death, then walk away.

If you have seen the movie Goodfellas, you may recall the scene where the mob takes over a bar: they run up bills on the company’s credit, rob the place blind, and then, when they’ve gotten as much as they can, burn the place down and walk away.
Pretty much sums it up.

Yup.

Petchesky decided to self-immolate when he was given what he believed was an unreasonable editorial dictate. By a plain reading of it, the request wasn't unreasonable at all, but ultimately we're not in the room with them so we don't know exactly how it was put into practice.

But the entire lot of them have been entitled dramatic hipsters for better part of the last half-decade and most of them still consider themselves martyrs after the hole Hulk Hogan thing. They still jam their pins into their Peter Thiel dolls for deciding he was going to go on the attack against Denton and Daulerio after Gawker outed him.

Nevermind the fact that had Barstool Sports outed a rich liberal philanthropist they'd have celebrated said philanthropist as a hero had he then bankrolled a lawsuit that drove them out of business. They have never been one for considering their hypocrisy - it's too adult for that crew.

This idea that new ownership was this draconian monolith that refused to let them opine on politics in any way is, at least on its face, completely ridiculous. But they DID want them to reign in their most petulant impulses because Deadspin was well on its way (if it wasn't there already) to becoming a niche site read only by squealing liberals who occasionally watched shootyhoops and used ostensibly a SPORTS sight to inform their view on life. That's really not that unreasonable a request.

But the staff had a temper tantrum and blew it all up instead. If there's a market for their services, they'll catch on somewhere else (and no, it won't be The Athletic). I suspect they'll scatter to the winds and a few of them will catch on at places like The Ringer. Guys like Ley will try to follow the Tom Scocca route and become 'contributors' at Slate while ultimately determining that sports was simply beneath them anyway.

When all they had to do was chill the **** out for a bit and figure out a way to work within the rules, at least until new management found out that 'their' way was truly profitable. If it is (was), prove it and keep working. Or be cranky little piss babies and go down in a blaze of...well, whatever an en masse resignation and some twitter tantrum qualifies as going down in a blaze of.

Or - and hear me out here - the staff at Deadspin could've been adults and figured out a way to do both.

THEY are the ones that made this into a Sophie's Choice situation. They're the ones that decided that the only options were 'completely unfettered editorial discretion' and 'torching this bitch and collecting the insurance money'.

But instead they decided to open fire on new ownership and hope their union can get them all some severance pay through negotiated hearings and ride that while they figure out a soft landing.

My 5 year old does this all the time - hears something she doesn't like and instead of trying to see how she can work within these parameters to a fulfilling conclusion, she just starts wailing about how unfair everything is until she has to get sent upstairs to read a book and chill the !@#$ out for 15 minutes. Then we have a conversation later and suddenly the world isn't quite as dark as she believed.

Petchesky is an example of "When Keeping it Real Goes Wrong" who then convinced the rest of the Deadspin staff to jump off a cliff with him. Okay - that's their prerogative. If they're right about the market for their services, they'll be just fine.

See - if poor Deadspin could've just held their water for a bit, they could've led the charge to cancel Kurt Suzuki!

And you know they would have. They'd have written some glowing prose about the greatness of Sean Doolittle and Anthony Rendon for skipping out in support of their minority teammates, then they'd have criticized Strasburg for attending ahead of his FA tour before absolutely barbecuing Kurt Suzuki. And that would've fueled them for several days.

And it would've absolutely been within the edicts of the 'related to sports' guidelines put forward by management.

But instead they acted like mopey teenagers so they'll miss all that sweet, sweet hand-wringing. Poor Deadspin...

It is when a large portion of the site had evolved far beyond just sports.

But G/O bought up a ton of properties and were trying to get them all to play better with each other.

This wasn't a 'Deadspin' thing to them - this was trying to balance the missions of several respective websites under that old 'kinja' sort of banner. They didn't want The Root and Concourse and Jezebel all preying on each other. Some organizations may see that as positive cross-promotion that would help raise the entire banner - G/O didn't. They wanted more concrete properties and entities that stayed in their own sandboxes with employees that understood that mission.

Okay - that's their prerogative. It's not even necessarily a BAD concept or one that should be dismissed out of hand. They HAVE their SJW property. They have their strictly political property. They have women's issues and video games and on and on and on. They have made a strategic decision to keep those entities as 'focused' as possible without them all just blending into one massive cross-post where attitudes that would play INCREDIBLY well on The Root would simply keep me from visiting Deadspin.

And yeah - that may frustrate the existing staff; folks who got off on being able to write about sports and be SUPER woke in the process. But man, them's the breaks. And I reiterate, they were NOT neutered. The 'Nationals Fans Boo Trump' post wasn't even considered a problem. It was the staff being petulant children and re-posting the results of pumpking carving contests and old long-form articles about the Ghostbusters villain as 'protest' that ultimately turned everything on its head.

Y'know what - maybe if you don't hire a drug-addled douche like AJ Daulerio and let him run your property into a mountain, shit like this won't happen. Maybe if your sense of entitlement can handle even a LITTLE direction from the people that sign your paychecks, you can figure out how to survive this.

I suspect in a months time the people that threw this little fit will look back and realize just how overblown their reactions were. Or at least by the time their severance packages run out.

Except that’s not what happened. G/O Media issued the “Stick to Sports” memo the day after the Trump/Nationals story.

"Spanfeller and others forced out an editor a couple months ago at Deadspin who didn't want to push a more strictly sports line on writers, and a few days ago, [they] sent out a memo the morning after a post on [President] Trump being booed at the World Series, saying let's stick to sports. And then they fired their acting editor as well."

Combined with the shuttering of Splinter, this smacks of abandoning your left of center readership for poorly articulated “adults in the room” reasons.

They'll be back up and running in a month or 2. There are plenty of good writers out there that know sports. If I was retired, I throw my hat in there myself.
