Deadspin Dead(ish)

I don't know who closely anyone's been following this, but Deadspin (along with CP and The Ringer) was my go to for sports-related content.

Their new VC overlords issued a "Stick to Sports" memo last Monday, the writers and editors revolted, and basically everyone quit.

Deadspin was decidedly left of center, and I doubt many of you will mourn its passing. They generally advocated for players over the NCAA and pro teams, pushed back on the narrative that stadiums are good investments for municipalities, and offered the kind of analysis the ESPNs of the world can't perform due to their broadcast deals.

But their football content was very good and it's (essentially) gone now and that sucks.

Giz has some good content that I can appreciate here and there...and deadspin USED to be a fun read...but as others have said, it's all devolved through the years. Critics of the new "overlords" seem to miss out on at least a couple of important facts - at least the overlords (ie - the adults in the room) understand you have to be profitable and you can't take a shit on as many of the demographics they like to take shits on. They simply can't help themselves from clamoring to silence and destroy anyone/anything that doesn't tic all of the boxes for their particular brand of niche-boutique leftism.

Further, what's so rich about all this is that they're demanding to be treated as serious journalists that should be independent of critique as they write their provocations...but they are some of the most unprofessional and juvenile writers w/ the WORST copy editing of any online rag that's read by a sizable demo. These are generalizations, I realize...I'm sure there are individuals that are pros, but overall, it has always felt like the frat-house of online journalism...and actually reads more like a collaborative blog than a true journalistic endeavor. The Athletic should not even be mentioned in the same breath with these guys. Not the same endeavor.

And the kinja commenters community are possibly some of the worst human beings on the planet.

That is not an accurate description of the memo:

“To create as much great sports journalism as we can requires a 100% focus of our resources on sports. And it will be the sole focus,” Maidment said. “Deadspin will write only about sports and that which is relevant to sports in some way.”

That's a bizarre take for the VC overlords to take when Deadspin literally had a culture editor. This was discussed in depth on the latest edition of The Press Box podcast on The Ringer...where they had a former Deadspin culture editor as a guest.

They didn't exactly employ a bunch of Joe Posnanski's.

They were a mildly amusing bunch of attack dogs with a penchant for being absolutely savage.

Like a bunch of discount Whitlocks.

The writing is on the wall for all of these institutions these...net journalism is changing and even Deadspin has to change.

I will miss Deadspin.

I could have used a lil’ less political banter, but **** the “derp, stick to sports only!” angle. I would have been interested to see how the new management would have handled the situation when Trump inserted himself into the Kaepernick situation.

Looks like I’ll need to find a new outlet for my wacky sports articles...

'Relevant in some way' is not an onerous request.

And if they had any interest in 'compromise' instead of grandstanding, they'd have written their articles then defended the relevance to sports when and if the ownership questioned it.

Indeed. They just went public with hope that twitter backlash would save their hides.

Then when someone got fired for giving management the finger, the rest of them quit out of someone misguided sense of honor.

They cut off their nose to spite their face.

They learned a hard lesson. You are not more powerful than management no matter how many twitter followers you have. I suspect this is the last bit of their 15 minutes, because having "Deadspin" attached to their name probably made it worth more than it ever was or ever will be.

Deadspin is dead, literally everyone quit. Their audience liked their content and will also go away. Its like a radio station changing format from Rock to Country.

These people were not professional athletes.

Scab writers are not going to destroy Deadspin.

I'm gonna guess in a year Deadspin is doing OK and most of these people are wishing they hadn't quit - internetz hot take writer isn't as lucrative a job as it used to be.
