We finally get to see what happened to Michael's guard in Sicily who planted the bomb that blew up his first wife.

A lot more scenes that explain the motives of the events that occured.

How many times have you seen The Godfather? Five? Ten? Fifteen? Too many to count? What about The Godfather Part II? Probably 50-75 percent as many times as you've seen the original? Something like that?

Regardless of what the actual number is, whenever it is on TV, it's hard to change the channel. It's to be expected from arguably the greatest film ever made and inarguably the greatest sequel ever made.

HBO, clever as the network is, recognized our collective weakness for Francis Ford Coppola's masterpieces, and has decided to air a seven-plus-hour, chronologically cut mashup of the two films. It is called The Godfather Epic, and not only will it tell the story of the Corleone family as we've never seen it before, it will feature additional footage that wasn't included in the theatrical version of the films. The 424-minute epic debuted on HBO Sunday afternoon, and will continue to air throughout the rest of January. It is also currently available to stream on HBO NOW. Clear your schedule.

The casting was outstanding, especially Andy Garcia, Joe Montegna and the incomparable Eli Wallach.

Whereas I thought Montegna was actually pretty bad. I agree with most that Coppola wasn't good, but I never found her to be the reason that I don't really like the movie.

Montegna didn't work for me at all, Hamilton instead of Duvall was just such a loss, Pacino continued to get more and more over the top (this is why I hate Scarface; it sent him down that road). And above all else, the story was just too farfetched and a little too bombastic. A helicoptor shooting up the boardroom as the major set piece? Ugh. Wait, did we just murder the friggen Pope?

The first two Godfather movies were great in part because of their scale or lack thereof; there was just much more intimacy there, IMO. The story for the third one just got too unwieldy.

I don't think it's an absolute disaster, but I don't think it's very good either.

I thought it was cool how the Catholic Church and Pope's death was interwoven with the Mafia (just like in real life).

I guess that looking back on it, the helicopter scene could be viewed as somewhat silly but there were several instances of helicopter scenes in movies in which people were killed from afar (Lethal Weapon, Blue Thunder, etc. and so on) so it didn't seem that out of place. Airwolf was also on the air around that time, so it really didn't seem "unusual".

As for Pacino, I agree. He went from being sublime and brilliant in his subtlety to becoming obnoxious. From 1990 to present day, there's only about three movies in which I can say that I enjoyed his performance: Heat, Carlito's Way and Donnie Brasco.

But in all honesty, DeNiro has jumped the shark big time, IMO, as well. All these comedies...

Yeah, Heat is the only movie he's made since Scarface where I really enjoyed him. Though I actually thought that his overacting worked in Any Given Sunday (and in Glengarry Glen Ross). I also thought he did a pretty decent job in The Recruit. Obviously neither of those movies are on the same level as Heat, but I liked how he fit in both of them.

It's almost like he saw how great some the explosions of anger he had in Godfather 2 worked and didn't realize that it was because of that quiet, calm menace that he portrays throughout the rest of the film. Losing his shit with Pantengeli and Kay worked well because he's just so calculated level-headed throughout the rest of the movies.

And man you are not kidding w/r/t De Niro.

I actually turned off Part III like shortly after the helicopter scene. I don't know, it just bored me and I didn't really care for the characters. I mean to try it again someday though, at least to get through it once.

Yeah, I've only watched it once. No strong memories of it, except I didn't hate it as much as many.

It's single biggest detraction isn't acting or script or direction. It's single biggest detraction is it's connection to 2 of the 5-10 best movies in the history of cinema.

It's a little like being one of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's offspring, expectations are too high to be met by a 'decent' movie.

I think De Niro's problem is he was too immediately successful [monetarily and performance-wise]. All those gritty painful wrenching parts, then he comes in with Analyze This and Meet the Parents and it's like 'oh, this is easy, people love me, AND I get rich???!!'

If people are going to marathon this, might like to take 15 min to review this overview of composition. IMO it adds a great deal to the experience of as well composed [set of] a film[s] as The GF saga.
