A Question About Socks

How many times do you think you can wear a pair of socks before they wear out?

I was putting my laundry away today, and I realized that I have a lot of sock. I'm not sure how many, but maybe 50 or 60 pairs, maybe even more. They've accumulated over the years since you don't really outgrow socks.

So for discussion purposes, let's assume that I own 52 pairs of socks and wear them equally. That means that each pair of socks is worn 7 times per year.

Given my age, I can probably expect to live another 33 years or so. If I never buy another pair of socks, that would mean that I'm going to wear each pair of socks 231 times.

Ignoring their current wear and tear, is 231 times feasible for a pair of socks? How long do they last? I honestly have no idea. Is it 50? 100? 200? 500?

Honestly, 231 seems like a lot since socks get wear and tear, and of course my socks aren't all brand new. I suspect that my sock buying days are not over, but I don't know what's reasonable in terms of sock life spans. What do you think?

I don't like variety. I think I would be crippled by such choices and inevitably disappointed with my daily choice.

Yes, but you also maintain a surplus that has lost it's "sock burst".

We're not talking about buying a new car.

The elasticity and thickness-quotients have to be a lower mid-tier by now, regardless of care.

I could see a potential issue with that. But I like having a sock for every job. Need a sock with elephants? I got it. Need one with a Union Jack? Check. Need some plain gray or white? Of course. I feel like I'm seldom caught flat-footed when I open my sock cabinet.

No one wants your "Bernard Pollard"-quality socks except the homeless.

I don't think that socks have a half-life, do they? Assuming that I can keep the moths out, they should remain well-preserved. I think they've found Egyptian socks that are still wearable after 4,000 years.

I'm also intrigued by the fact that our estimates in the poll are all over the board. We wear socks almost every day of our lives, and yet we know so little about them. We can't even estimate their life span. What kind of civilization are we?

Is there ever an occasion that cannot be filled by a plain white, black, or brown sock?

Sometimes you have to dress to impress. Chicks at parties don't comment on plain socks.

I just went and looked, I probably have at least that many pairs.

I wear black work socks, thicker than normal and when I put one on that has a hole I just chuck it and the next time I'm a the store I buy a new pack and rotate it in and just keep throwing away and buying socks. There is a decent sized laundry basket of socks.

I probably should quit purchasing. I just opened a new pack yesterday. Lol

When they get holes in them, they're thrown out... otherwise I'm looking at a wearable pair of socks.

Or more to the point; outside of a trip to the Marquee Club for Ska Night, when exactly do a pair of "Union Jack" socks become necessary?
