Oklahoma - Get your act together

What's the deal with those toll roads? I was driving along and all of a sudden my road announced that it was turning into a toll road. Whatever - that's rude, but I can deal with it.

But here's the thing that annoys me. There's a sign that says, "Exact Coins Required". That's it. That's the extent of the instructions.

First off, I live in the 21st century, so I generally don't have coinage in my pocket at all. Occasionally I may have a few if I just bought something with cash, which in itself seldom occurs.

But second, and most importantly, what exact coinage do I need? I'm more likely to have a quarter in my pocket than to have 88 cents. Is the fee 50 cents or 32 cents or 79 cents? This is really important information to provide to the traveling motorist.

With no other option available to me, I veered off on the alternate route and drove the backwoods for an hour, which was probably more interesting and fun. But come on, Oklahoma. Give me a chance to use a credit card, or at least give me a change machine or something. Things like this are why people choose to vacation instead in California or Hawaii.

(I may have posted about this the last time I was in Oklahoma, but if so, it's still not fixed.)

What are "exact coins"? If the toll is say $1.25, does that mean 5 quarters? What if I only have 4 quarters, 2 dimes, and a nickel? How about 3 quarters and 50 pennies? Damn Okies!!

Yeah, Oklahoma is dumb.... I had to pull off to the side and walk to this little building where they took my credit card and spent what felt like 10 minutes processing it.

And like you said, in California you just go online and pay it.

People are suppose to plan their trip and be aware of what is along the way.

They do not take pennies. It is expected, which is not asking too much, for a person to be prepared for the trip that they are taking.

It means if the toll is $1.25 and you have two dollar bills, you're not getting any change back.

Just exit to a service station and get change. They are supposed to be working on online payments with the plate recognition camera. With the State DOT and various Indian toll roads I am sure its hard to get done. I think first offence failure to pay toll is 25 bucks. Just exit to a fueling station and get change. The card you received entering will give you exit prices.

Kansas recently installed a new K-Tag only lane on I-70. K-Tag is the digital tollpike pass you can order for free, which lets you bypass the pay gates and pay online later. You just drive in this special lane and it zaps the RFID chip without requiring you to stop. But when they added the new lane, they labeled the signs kind of assuming that every driver knows what K-tag is. Dozens of times now I've seen drivers get confused and use the K-tag only lane when they don't have K-tag, and then end up stopping and driving in reverse back through traffic trying to get to the cash only lanes.

You'd think that clarity would be a pretty high priority...

That's the fun of OK, KS, and TX, the tolls. If I were gonna issue a complaint about Oklahoma it would be the hate that nature has for it for some reason. I don't know that I've ever driven through there without being accosted by a severe storm. But if I remember at least in the Lone Star State I believe that they're only in the metro areas unlike OK, and KS where it links the metros on the interstates

When it comes to normal stuff like the fastest route, how much construction you'll encounter, if there are toll roads at all.... yeah.

When it comes to stupid, outdated things that shouldn't exist anywhere in 2018 (a decade ago, you say? I'm sure it was like that 6 decades ago )... get your shit together, Oklahoma.

At least it's not as bad as not pumping your own gas, I guess.

Obviously knowing the definition of pass would be helpful.
