Trump Calls for Russia to Rejoin G7, Exacerbating Rift with Allies

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/...t-with-allies/

President Trump called on allies to reinstate Russia as part of the G7 Friday, deepening a rift over trade policy that spilled out on Twitter just days ahead of the summit in Canada.

“Russia should be in this meeting,” Trump told reporters at the White House immediately before departing for the summit. “Why are we having a meeting without Russia being in the meeting? And I would recommend — and it’s up to them — but Russia should be in the meeting, it should be a part of it. You know, whether you like it or not, and it may not be politically correct, but we have a world to run and the G-7 — which used to be the G-8, they threw Russia out — they should let Russia come back in because we should have Russia at the negotiating table.”

Russia was expelled from the G7 in 2014 in retaliation for its annexation of the Crimean peninsula — a violation of international law that drew universal condemnation from U.S. allies.

The unexpected show of support for Russia came after Trump traded blows on Twitter with French president Emmanuel Macron and Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau over a perceived imbalance in the trade relationship between the United States and its allies.
Comments

Following the Twitter spat, the White House announced late Thursday that Trump would not attend a session dedicated to climate change on Saturday morning, announcing that he would instead fly directly to Singapore to meet with Kim Jong-un.

The public back-and-forth came days after the Trump administration imposed significant steel and aluminum tariffs on a number of U.S. allies, including European Union nations and Canada, after initially exempting the countries from the protectionist measure. Both Canada and the E.U. have challenged Trump’s national-security justification for the tariffs in complaints filed with the World Trade Organization, and both have also announced retaliatory tariffs.

The simple reality seems to be that he is. Even if the Mueller probe turns up nothing (which as the actions unfold, seem less and less likely) his advocating for Russia and dismissal of the Crimean annexation, as the leader of the most powerful country in the world - makes him an asset to Russia and Putin.

That's not really relevant, if the trade is free. Each individual buyer buys and sells what it needs and wants—not what govts dictate. If Russia doesn't have it then you don't buy it. If Russia doesn't have enough to sell besides oil, then it hurts them and they have to diversify or import from others. But there are countries, like Europe, who will buy their oil.

If you understand free market economics, the consumers drive the market—not govts or govt management which you seem to be thinking of with such a pre-determined outlook. There's no reason to exclude Russia.

Heck, devout Christians even from America are moving to Russia because it has a culture less hostile to their values. Plus, I hear there are some great real estate deals smack in the middle of Siberia.

Heh! Expect come to go nuts over that last facetious statement...though there are western Christians moving there.

Wanna Move to Russia?

Escaping the decadence of the west, a number of families are relocating to Russia, seeking rest in a country which welcomes traditional family values. And in most cases, relocating means purchasing a home. Looks like a slice of America!

Cute 3,500 foot house in Russia. Not bed eh? I might buy a 2nd home there, myself.

So, you would also support dropping sanctions on North Korea?

Looks like that is currently being worked out.

Don't know what it has to do with Russia. NK is an isolated totalitarian country that has hurled missiles in our direction. If they stop that and denuclearize, they might have a chance.

So you would agree that there are reasons for government to intervene on trade to penalize countries who actions they don't like. Sanctions have been imposed on Russia and they have been excluded from the G7 due to Crimea and human rights abuses committed by Putin's regime.

No you're extrapolating that on your own. I only stated what was actually happening.

Generally tho', I oppose the use of economic warfare such as sanctions as they are prelude to war or even acts of war. You may not see the bombs flying around killing people including children but if they're severe enough like the ones imposed on Iraq, they're no different than a blockade. It's just with the use of planes, blockades aren't used as much. Trade is the best way for new ideas or better ideas to filter into a country whereby change can happen without using force and aggression.

I don't buy the all of current allegations on Putin, especially for doing what the west has been doing. It's a double standard. Crimea belongs to Russia historically. We caused that Ukraine conflict via CIA and NGOs there. In fact Soros was funding some of it. You're acting like the typical progressive who uses the force and violence of govt to tell other countries how to run their countries, what laws they should have, while we use even worse countries who have human rights abuses for rendition, overthrow govts, rig elections ad nauseum.

You sound like progressive Mad Madeleine Albright who said 500, 000 dead Iraqi Children was "worth it." I don't support that kind of progressive crap who are nothing but busy bodies here at home and around the globe making a mess of it.

How do you know "nobody" wants to go there?

I don't support open-borders. Apparently you do a la Soros. Most of Europe until the EU, and still even in Switzerland today, have had much tougher immigration policies than the US. We've been among the most liberal in the world.

I just showed you something whereby there are people who have been moving there from the West, because they like Russian for having traditional values or a place where they can practice their religion with others of like mind.
