The ad revenue was the primary reason for the acquisitions, yes. As far as focus, I think youre right.

DTV was great back in the late 90s. Their customer service hasnt been good for years, long before AT&T bought them.

Yes, it became expensive to trench and they had lots of technical difficulties with the 'last mile" old copper pipes.

Google Fiber is scaling back as well and looking for a last mile wireless solution because of the expense of trenching cable and all the red tape they have had to cut thru.
Even Google cant beat market costs for that last mile. They have a shit ton of cash to spend but why on solving the last mile? They got a huge pile of money by not being stupid. Wireless is the future, not cables.

I always try to call and get a Directv employee instead of AT&T. The original Directv employees are pretty decent, but ma bell forces their employees to take giant shots on the customer as much as possible. Its only a matter of time before they start laying off Time Warner employees and replacing them with their own lifeless drones.

Not true. They wanted midificTions to the agreement, not kill it. Specifically they wanted CNN sold as a stand alone station.

Umm.....if the government would have won it's court argument there would have been no merger....that seems to be opposed to me.

Uh, not necessarily.

The Government could have still "won" while letting the merger happen, forcing ATT to do certain things for the deal to be approved.

The government's base argument was against the merger...I suppose they could have spun a modified agreement as a "win".

Does not really matter, it is not a good thing for customers overall. More options the better, but it is what it is.

it doesn’t have to be “it is what it is”. We broke up Ma bell because it was constraining invoation and competition.

Everyone knows that having all this power concentrated in just a few companies means less choice and higher prices for all of us. It Stifles innovation and prevents progress if there was competition between companies.
