My Mock - 4/8

I'm doing this exclusively from prospects that have been interviewed by the Chiefs.

2/54: Frank Ragnow, C. Veach makes a lot of people rage by picking an offensive player as his first pick, but picks up a real under-rated beast who can play some guard in his first year and also be an option to replace Morse next year at center.

3/78: Armani Watts, S. Probably the better coverage safety to complement Berry. Some of the other safeties available at this pick will be more like Berry replacements than Berry complements, in my opinion.

3/86: Ogbo Okoronkwo, EDGE. Chiefs are known for picking people with hard to pronounce names. PFF ranks him 5th in this edge class, I think he has a good chance to really develop into a solid NFL player.

4/122: Nick Nelson, CB. I think he would go higher if it wasn't for the injury, could be good value in the 4th round I think. Might even go in the 5th, but I can't see a logical way to trade up or down to the 5th with the picks the Chiefs have this year.

4/124: Nathan Shepherd, DL. Developmental pick for the Dline who I wouldn't expect to play much in year one, but could eventually be a very good player. The DL unit has okay depth but is full of guys with 1 year left on their deal, so a good time for a developmental pick.

6/209: Rashaan Gaulden, CB. Adding some depth here to a very weak CB group that also has potentially 2 of 3 starters not signed through 2019.

7/233: Logan Woodside, QB. Not really sure what QB's will be kicking around at the end of the draft, but I think the Chiefs probably fill their QB room with a kid from the late rounds, Woodside would be decent for that.

7/243: Lowell Lotulelei, DL. Terrible 2017 but decent the year before. There's a coaching connection through Alex Whittingham so maybe they know what the issues were in 2017 and he can be a rotational NT depth guy or get cut in camp.

I think you can get what you need in the 4th round with a kid like Mason Cole. at the C/G position. No need to spend a 2nd rounder on that position IMO.

I’m on the same page. I also really like Austin Golson.

Big fan of Frank Ragnow though

Ragnow can play both center and LG. I wouldn't be mad at the pick. Some say he's the best interior OL in the draft.

Chiefs D is probably going to suck either way you look at it, unless Ford and Houston unleash hell, which is probably unlikely. Sorry I just think the dominant days of Justin Houston are over, and the Chiefs are sucked into a giant contract for average play. Yes sacks aren't everything, but the guy is getting paid $100M to kill the opposing QB, which he's not anywhere close to living up to his end of the deal by any measure.

Right now, the Chiefs #1 priority the first year of the Mahomes era is to protect and give Mahomes as many as weapons as possible so he can be in the aboslute best position to succeed. If the Chiefs want to be successful long term, that's the most important. He's the only *truly* untrade-able guy on the Chiefs roster right now. Hunt Berry and Kelce might also be on that list, but nowhere near as important to this franchise succeeding than Mahomes right now.

This draft is deep at OLB, DL, and DB. Those positions can be addressed in later rounds if need be. I think next season is where you go defense early. We'll have a first rd pick and two 2nd rd picks. Then build more OL depth.

I'm fine with building up the OL, although I don't trust POS Heck at OL coach to coach them up. I'm also fine with any plan that allows us to kick Morse and any other softies at left guard to the curb. We've had enough of the bullshit finesse play on the OL.

I picked Ragnow because he's a first round talent in my opinion, but he almost definitely goes in the second round so it would be an amazing value pick, almost like trading to the 1st for free.

PFF grades Ragnow and Quentin Nelson almost the same, it's just Ragnow does his job well without smashing the guy in front of him into the dirt so there is less hype.

Plus Morse has been unreliable injury wise, I am not sure the Chiefs want to extend him because of that, and the current back up center behind injury prone Morse is probably Devey.
