Late night bullshit: 10 Reasons To Feel Hopeful About The Chiefs' Future

In no order.

1. We have an offense that is one really good WR away from being a complete unit that are all under contract for multiple years. Smith at QB, both Charles, Davis, and DAT at RB, Bowe at WR, Kelce at TE, and Fisher, Hudson, and Fulton at OL... The Chiefs will need a piece here or there, but all of these players are under contract for at least two more years after this season, so the offense has serious potential to grow together. The one exception is Hudson, but the Chiefs will almost-certainly re-sign him for multiple years.

2. We already have our key centerpieces on defense. We have an All Pro caliber stud at all three levels -- Poe at the most important position, Houston on the outside (Hali as well, but sadly I think he's gone soon), and Berry at the third level. That's a young trio of talent that can produce for another 8 years together with which you can build.

3. Our GM has outflanked the board at (almost) every turn on personnel. We bagged on him for Chase Daniel, and Daniel looked pretty good. We bagged on him for Avery, but Avery was Smith's favorite target last year. We bagged on him for Anthony Sherman, but look at what he's done. Nate Harris has won the RT job over Donald Stephenson. Mike McGlynn has played very solidly against two really good DLs now. Ron Parker has been steady now that he's at safety. Kevin Vickerson. Akeem Jordan. Geoff Schwartz. Joe McKnight. He seems to excel at bringing in steady-to-really-good talent at pennies on the dollar.

4. The 2013 draft class has promise after 1 year. The top three picks are all trending positive. Eric Fisher is being brought along slowly and responding well. Travis Kelce looks like an All Pro in the making. Knile Davis is a part of the NFL's best RB tandem. Time still will tell with Commings and Catapano. Kush hasn't seen the field, but looks really good in preseason.

5. As we've said before, the Chiefs only need to sweep their 5 lousy opponents and beat 2 of their good ones to have a 9-7 record and a 2/3's chance at the postseason:
Quote:

Which means, to get to that magical 9-7 threshold, we need two more wins. And three more wins if we want to be a sure thing.

The remaining games to get two wins from:
  • Week 5, visiting San Francisco
  • Week 7, visiting San Diego
  • Week 11, hosting the Seahawks
  • Week 13, hosting the Broncos
  • Week 14, visiting Arizona
  • Week 16, visiting Pittsburgh
  • Week 17, hosting the Chargers
I would hope the Chiefs could secure at least two more wins here, but I'll be damned if I know where it is.
6. Hey, 11 draft picks in 2013! The dawning of a new era of Chiefs talent is upon us, especially now that the 2008 talent has almost all gone.

7. Alex Smith plays his ass off in the playoffs. As much as we rib Smith on this website for being a physically limited, psychologically conservative game manager, he plays his ass off in the playoffs. His three best games as a professional football player have all been in the playoffs, both as a 49er or as a Chief, where he put in possibly the best performance by a Chiefs QB in the playoffs in my young lifetime.

8. Charles and Davis are the best RB tandem in the NFL. I think Giovanni Bernard and Jeremy Hill comes very close, but I would argue that the Chiefs have the best combo in the league -- one that allows the best player on our team to prolong his career.

9. Our coaching staff is coaching players up. The coaching staff has effectively helped several players develop their game, showing marked improvement from year to year. Jaye Howard and Marcus Cooper spring to mind, as does Rodney Hudson, Josh Mauga and Eric Fisher. This is a staff you can ostensibly trust projects with.

10. We only have Chase Daniel under contract for one more year. So, hey, there's that.

Two of the three center pieces you mentioned on defense may be gone in the near future.

Edit: I agree with most of your points, though.

Uh, Chase Daniel sucks.

Other than that, nice OP.

PS - It's two good games in the playoffs. Two. Thanks.

Except Andy is still stupid enough to not run the ball when we should be shoving it down the opponents throats.

Nice write up... our offense has me excited for the future. It definitely has the potential to become lethal. We have a ton of young playmakers showing loads of potential, and the youngest o line in the league is starting to come around.

People like to give Dorsey shit (myself included) but he has done a good job a picking up solid scrap heap players.

And the 2013 draft class looks like it could be our best class since 2008. Crazy thing about it is both Cat and commings have an insane amount of talent as well. We've seen cat, and know what he became in the off season, and sanders is a physical freak of nature, though I doubt he will ever be healthy.

The 2014 class looks awful.. but the 13 class were late bloomers, hopefully they are too lol.

10. We only have Chase Daniel under contract for one more year. So, hey, there's that.
1. I don't even think we're that far off at Receiver. Everyone keeps screaming receiver, as I myself did in the draft, but this offense has been pretty god damned effective even in some bad games. ****, if anything we just need linemen right now. Bowe, Avery, Hemingway, Charles, Kelce, Fasano, Sherman, Davis, and DAT leaves us so many ****ing options right now, I don't think I even want to bring in another receiver unless he's like a prime time route runner with a big body who catches everything coming his direction. Basically Bowe, but more consistent.

2. I disagree here. We don't even "have" Berry except for on paper right now, and if he continues to get injured, as he's done basically every year since being drafted, he's of no use to this team for the money we give him to sit in the doctors office. I wouldn't be surprised if he's traded/cut/restructured soon if he doesn't come back and set the world on fire.

3. Who the **** is Nate Harris? And McGlynn is NOT that good, and hasn't looked THAT good so far. He's gotten steamrolled more times than he's pancaked. Total liability IMO. And as for the free agency moves, almost all of them have been busts in terms of signing free agents, and he ****ing shit the bed with our offensive line in free agency. He's drafting well, but I'd ****ing hesitate to give him the seal of approval just yet with so many draft picks coming our way in the 2015 draft from compensatory selections. Unless the NFL rules guys like McGlynn and Vickerson, who suck, as guys who count towards contribution, then I'll be even MORE pissed about those moves costing us picks in the 4th/5th rounds from the talent we decided to say "bye felicia" to this year.

4. True story, and that's why Dorsey/Reid are good fits here, because in KC you have to draft WELL to put a team together. We'll never be competitive enough as a small market team to drive in big ticket names. 2015's draft class will make or break Dorsey's career here in KC.

5. Its going to be next to impossible to make the playoffs with a 9-7 record the way the South/North are running right now, and with us standing next to zero chance at having a better record than either Denver or San Diego. I'm hoping for a 9-7 record, personally, as I don't like to tank for picks, I like to finish strong and develop the talent, but I have no reservations of any 9-7 team going to the playoffs in the AFC this year.

6. 11 draft picks in 2013? Huh? I think you're forgetting words here or something.

7. Well duh, if you put a good line in front of a QB who is a game manager in a high percentage offense, with weapons, and with the ability to scramble, he's going to put up good games in the playoffs as long as the defense plays on a similar level. He's not a "shoot out" QB, but he certainly is a "driving" QB in the playoffs.

8. Agreed, and it goes beyond just Charles and Davis, you can add in Sherman to that mix, and you've literally got the most dominant run game in the NFL, if only the line were half as talented. We won't be the #1 rushing team this year, and the stats will wildly argue against it, but there isn't a more talented backfield in the NFL, and with a sprinkling of the Black Mamba, who knows what we'll do from here on out. One thing I know for sure, our 3 "RB"s are tops in the NFL in terms of playmaking ability and home run speed.

9. That's why I LOVED when Reid came to KC. Everyone's dogging on him for clock management and not utilizing JC enough, you know what? That's on the coordinators too, but Reid has ONE HELL of a track record of turning guys' potential into tangible, on the field productivity.

10. Its one year too many, Chase Daniel is way too overpaid for QB, and I can't wait until this off-season when he's cut from this team and we roll with Smith/Murray/Bray for the next few years.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Lose a close game and people are satisfied. All of a sudden KCs crap group of WRs and guys like Mcglynn are good enough. Hunt knows his fan base.

- if the OL continues to improve, and likely add an upgrade at LG...

- if KC can add a quality WR that can run sharp routes and attack the football... pushing Avery to #3 or just out the door... (assuming here that they even keep Bowe somehow.. but for the cost alone, I'd keep Avery and dump Bowe)...

- if Andy Reid can break his nasty habits in playcalling...

Then, this offense should continue to evolve into a top 15 one.
Keep something in mind... as of right now, KC is ranked 12th best in offensive efficiency... and that's while having the 30th ranked OL. That's incredible.

- I don't love it, but would pay Berry his final contract year to assess how to handle him in 2016. I would try desperately to extend Hali a few years, and hope he wants to stay badly enough to bring the cap numbers down. Tag Houston if necessary, and if feasible.

Must add defensive talent at CB, ILB, and probably DL.

- Can't say I agree with too much you stated in #3.. but it's not all bad either.

Anyway, this team certainly does have promise... and should remain competitive for years. Some folks would rather go 0-16 than to be an 8-10 win team and get bounced from the playoffs. I can't agree with that thinking. The season is long, and I'd rather have the joys of an up and down year than a completely down one.

Charles & Davis "could" be best tandem in the NFL however Andy Reid stubborn fat ass pass happy on 2nd and one and 3rd and one yard makes that dynamic tandem not so much.

The team is good enough to win games but coaching and themselves get in the way.

1. People will never be satisfied with the offensive line even if they improve to adequate level. It's the nature of Chiefs fans

2. Dorsey's going to tell those centerpieces to go **** themselves, it sounds like. I'd also rather disperse some of those centerpieces around than have them ALL concentrated in the front 7.

3. Hooray? We still can't win a Super Bowl (or a playoff game) by starting crap.

4. Kelce and Davis are good. Fisher... just... whatever. I'm not going to get into that. If Kush were trusted with shit, I might be on board here with the 2013 class. Otherwise, Catapano is close to death and Commings IS dead. I'm not counting on those guys for shit. Still big question marks.

5. That's what I'm most hopeful about. We can absolutely beat Pittsburgh, who's much shittier than everybody thinks they are. I think we could also do the very un-Chiefs thing and win a tough division game this year. We'll see, though.

6. Chiefs Planet thinks the draft is dumb and wanted to kill off Draft Planet. Remember, Direckshun?

7. Where's my ****ing playoff win? I. Don't. ****ing. Care. What. He. Did. In. San Francisco. He could have blown dudes on the sideline all game and I wouldn't care. He needs to do the shit he was said to do OVER ****ING HERE.

8. Yes. And Maverick can go get Ebola for suggesting Gore and Hyde. Just because their team beat our shitty run D (Gore only had barely over 100 yards) doesn't mean they're shit. Besides, Gore's going to ****ing die soon.

9. Our coaching staff also loses a shit ton of games. At least Vermeil got the most he could out of his players and wasn't an enormous moron on gamedays.

10. I'm going to kill Chase Daniel. I hate him. I really do. I hate him almost as much as I hate Cassel. I almost hope Alex gets injured so Daniel can come in for a few games and we can prove to the world once and for all that Daniel is ACTUALLY an awful shitty QB
