Bob Costas on the future of football: 'This game destroys people's brains'

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ins/842904001/

Quote from top of article:

“The reality is that this game destroys people’s brains," he said Tuesday night.

Speaking at a roundtable discussion at the University of Maryland, Costas, who hosted Football Night in America on NBC for more than a decade, said the sport could collapse over time, barring a development in technology to make it reasonably safe. He said the decline of football, which was once “a cash machine,” is the most significant story in American sports.

“The cracks in the foundation are there,” Costas said. “The day-to-day issues, as serious as they may be, they may come and go. But you cannot change the nature of the game. I certainly would not let, if I had an athletically gifted 12- or 13-year-old son, I would not let him play football.”

Maybe the declining participation in youth football will finally lead to US domination in Soccer?

Soccer is far more dangerous than football. Have you seen some of those injuries they get? If you have a strong stomach, check out the guy at 2:05 of this video.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Costas is a perfect example of someone who thinks people are waiting on pins and needles for his opinion on virtually any topic.

he's smug, and condescending. yet, thinks everyone wants to hear what he has to say.

Sports has followed Hollywood and music in making everything political.

Soon, not even food will be safe from politics...

Outside of the obvious K.O.'s ...I believe these guys...to some extent or another...get concussed multiple times per game. But muscle memory and years of playing the sport enable them to play through it without displaying any outwardly obvious symptoms.

I'm not saying it'll happen tomorrow or next year, but if it doesn't happen within 20 years I'll be surprised.
I think many are jumping the gun a bit on this. So much is not known about CTE and its causes that they are just scratching the surface really. Once more comprehensive and scientifically valid studies are done, we will better know the true correlation between playing football and CTE. We should never forget that millions have played football since its inception and yet millions obviously do not have CTE. Once years of studies are done, I am guessing that playing football (and other collision sports), will be seen as a potential risk factor in acquiring CTE among many other risk factors they will be able to identify. As with most things, the media has gotten a hold of this and made this concern likely something far greater than it actually is.

They were hidden by the NFL in the past, hence the $765 million dollar concussion settlement, which is now an unlimited amount.

correct. Only in the last 7 years or so. Before that, it was assumed that banging your head and body against 300 lb men was probably not good for your health.

I've seen those old advertisements where Doctors told women to take up smoking to help lose weight.

My mom started smoking in the 40's because a doctor told her it was a great way to control her weight. She was chain smoking during her pregnancy with all her kids too.
