Quarterbackery: Round 1, Heat 7

Today is an AFC South matchup. The Houston Texans versus the Indianpolis/Baltimore Colts. Who's going to win? Whooooo?

Because Texans haven't been around for 50 years, I'll add the percent of their relevant time frame to make things more comparable.

Texans

Matt Schaub - 7 seasons (50% of franchise history)
David Carr - 5 (36%)
Bobby Hoyer - 1 (and current starter) (7%)
Ryan Fitzpatrick - 1 (7%)

They have produced 2 pro bowls, both by Schwab (which would scale up to 7.1 pro bowls in 50 years).

Colts

Peyton Manning - 13 seasons (26% of 50-year history)
Bert Jones - 6 (12% of 50-year history)
Andrew Luck - 4 (8% of 50-year history)
Jim Harbaugh - 4 (8% of 50-year history)
Jeff George - 4 (8% of 50-year history)
Mike Pagel - 4 (8% of 50-year history)
Johnny Unitas - 4 (led team for 14 seasons, but only 4 since 1966) (8% of 50-year history)
Jack Trudeau - 3 (6% of 50-year history)
Marty Domres - 2 (4% of 50-year history)
Earl Morrell - 2 (4% of 50-year history)
Curtis Painter - 1 (2% of 50-year history)
Chris Chandler - 1 (2% of 50-year history)
Greg Landry - 1 (2% of 50-year history)
Bill Troup - 1 (2% of 50-year history)

They produced 19 pro bowlers, led by 11 from Peyton Manning. Three were by Andrew Luck and so may be less impressive since he's being heavily marketed by the NFL.

My thoughts:

The Texans are trying different models, and are trying to do it right. They drafted a #1 pick, and then they traded for what they thought to be a rising veteran. They've been stable at the QB position even if not very successful. I think overall they're about average.

The Colts are a lesson in the power of one good pick, but they've actually gleaned pro bowls from several players, including Bert Jones and Jim Harbaugh. Luck is a decent pickup even I don't think he's the second coming of Sammy Baugh, and of course they had Johnny U. finishing up his career at the beginning of the 50-year period. It's easy to pick the winners, but we should note that for half of the last 50 years they've been suiting up some pretty weak talent at the QB position. It's hard to say that the Colts have been anything other than "Very Strong" just because of Manning and Unitas, though an argument could be made that they're only "somewhat strong" since they had a couple of decades of Jack Trudeau and Mike Pagel and others. I still voted "Very Strong".

Pretty small sample size for Houston, and I tend to agree they've been about average. Colts in a landslide.

Jeff George for 4 years pushes Indy to "tremendously beyond very strong, they're huge in fact".
