Not doing the same workout isn't the same thing as exercise variation. You can do something like a bench press for years, but by varying your rep range, volume, weight, etc., you can build increases without doing a different exercise.

It took 20-something posts for this thread to turn into an insult filled shit show. Boys, I am dissapoint. That took entirely too long.

Just because you are not correct in your statements on how to improve a specific lift you go to childish name calling. Good for you.

Most I got to was 235 when I was at 187lbs at 28 years old, and that was only 2 reps. Never really pushed myself to be the biggest and the bulkiest, always had more of a swimmer's body, but I would usually come in and do three sets of 12, 10, 8 reps of 185-225 depending on if I had a spotter. It's pretty damn ridiculous the type of commitment it all takes, especially nutritional.

I like to focus on shoulders, chest and triceps if I'm trying to make some bench gains. My favorites are incline bench, chest fly, push press, DB shoulder press, dips (dips are underrated, IMO), and seated DB triceps extensions.
But if I'm not ****ing around I just go heavier on bench. Nothing works better to blast through a plateau than challenging yourself with heavier weights. I generally like to work my way up to like 90-100% of my one rep max if I'm trying to break through. |

I don't get bench pressing. I mean, I did when I was in my 20's and wanted to be huge. Now, at 50, I think it's a stupid movement. If you are into body building, which I'm not sure why anyone would be, as the outcome once you get into your 50's and up doesn't generally look very good. Otherwise, why bench press? "Hey look, I can press 350 lbs straight up from my chest". That'll be great when a 350 lb dude is laying on top of your chest. NTTAWWT. Otherwise, it's worthless. Plus, pretty much any women I've ever known think that the huge chest thing is pretty much a turnoff. Hell, they think the huge body builder look is a turnoff in general. Go for the athletic look. For that, you don't need bench press. at least not with massive weights.

Everyone is different. Some dudes want to look like the Hulk, some would rather look like Batman, and others Spider-Man. There are many more who clearly just don’t give a damn. And women like muscles. They were probably just telling you that to make you feel better about your Everyman body. |
