Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Kristofferson very briefly mentions the fact that it wasn't at all well received in an interview in the extras, i could hardly believe it... story, acting, locations... its all there in spades.

The only thing i can possibly imagine people bitching about is its 3+ hour length.

It isn't just the making of Heaven's Gate that is fascinating, but also the whole United Artists story. The only independent studio, originally run by artists, then by a parent company that stayed mostly out of the creative process. After the financial disaster, UA was sold to a studio, effectively ending independent movies having wide distribution in 1980. Orion tried to do something similar, and was related by having ex-UA studio heads, but struggled by 1990 or so. Independent film had to reinvent itself leading to the independent boom of the 90s.

That was wildly simplified, but if you are interested in the history of the film business, the pre-MGM United Artists chapter is very interesting.

Caught Unstoppable on FX. It wasn't nearly as shit tacular as I anticipated. From the previews it looked like pure ****ing cheese. But it really wasn't that bad. If they'd have had some better previews I'd have watched it.

Director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven is quite enjoyable.

Watched two excellent movies last night...

Oblivion with Tom Cruise was actually pretty damn cool, easily the best thing i've seen him in since forever... its a visually striking movie not only for effects but just the cinematography, a very engaging story, one of the better sci-fi movies i've seen in a long time.

When Cruise can be icy cool and calculating, he's still actually very good... its when he's asked to show some kind of human warmth that he falls flat for me, he hasn't been able to show that kind of feeling since Jerry MaGuire.

And finally, Mud... its freaking GREAT, just rush out and get it, easily the best thing McConaughhey has ever done imo, that's the review, check it out.

If you haven't seen it yet, you should watch Jack Reacher.

I rented it a while back, gotta admit i didn't care for it, maybe i just didn't give it enough of a chance, i probably gave it about 15 minutes and it didn't pull me in so i started puttering around the house and making phone calls.

I'll end up re-renting it one of these days i'm sure.

Mud on the other hand, i just now basically demanded that my mom watch it right this minute.

Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band on Netflix instant! I had almost forgotten this movie existed. Bee Gees, Frampton, Aerosmith, Steve Martin and George Burns sing the Beatles!

Finally got around to watching the last Bourne movie today - you know, the Bourne movie without Bourne in it, except for photos of Bourne. And even though Bourne wasn't in it, it was like I'd already seen it three times before. Evil government goons with unlimited resources try and fail to catch super spy and his girlfriend, with tons of car/bike chases in exotic foreign locales. Shocking! Darn, I guess I should have used the spoiler tag.

It was an entertaining film, but could we even get a shred of originality in these ****ing things?

If you're looking for originality, the fourth movie in a franchise probably isn't the best place to look.
