Comp Committee: Full Time Refs; No Leaping Center on Kicks

FWIW I'm seeing that the competition committee is suggesting making it illegal to jump over the center to try to block field goals or PATs.

And they are also suggesting having referees becoming full time employees.

On leaping the center, I'm torn. If it's a true player safety thing, then fine I guess. But every change everywhere seems to make it more and more of a quarterback-driven league, and I'm not a big fan of that trend.

On full time refs -- sure, if it is thought it will improve the quality of calls. One concern someone posted is that alot of refs make good money in their "other" jobs and so it might reduce the field of good referees.

It's the long snapper but yeah they line up in the center position and it seems like a good change.

I've got no issue with leaping as long as it's unassisted. I mean, the only player at risk is the jumper...are they going to outlaw all jumping on the field?

Apparently the NFLPA is strongly behind the "no leaping" rules change. Concerns that someone is going to break his neck when his ankles gets clipped is the prime motivator.

Yeah, long snapper, though technically they can't leap him. Need to leap the LS/guard gap, as we saw during the SB (though the refs blew that call actually).

They need a committee to review the fairness refs give in games. Such as NE and Denver. Review games of how many holding calls and things they call and miss on both sides and see if a team is getting an unfair advantage do to refs favoritism.

If they start seeing a trend and hold these refs accountable then I think we could see better officiating down the pike.

It's my understanding that refs at every position (line judge, etc. etc.) are graded for every single game. Every call, and every non-call. Then those with the best grades are the ones that make the playoffs. The ones that do the best are then assigned to the Super Bowl.

What, beyond that, are you suggesting?

"The NFL has a very sophisticated evaluation system," Frump told me. "Every single play is graded."

Every week, Frump told me, every official's performance on every play is reviewed by league staff members with on-field officiating experience. Further, Frump said, there's "a live evaluation being done by somebody on-site," and the report from the observer is taken into account along with the film study grades.

"Just like the players shoot for the postseason," Frump told me, "everybody is looking for ways to improve themselves, because the grading system determines who goes and works the postseason games."

With so much riding on these grades, there's plenty of oversight and review built into the process. "If a particular call's going to be downgraded, it doesn't just happen with one person," Frump said. "There's a review process which involves a number of NFL supervisors looking at the same play together. There has to be a strong consensus before an official is downgraded."

Yet another layer of control is built into the evaluations. "Those grades are rolled into a report that is maintained by an independent third party contracted by the NFL," Frump said, ensuring the grades are fairly compiled and reported.

If the evaluations are maintained by a third party, though, how do the officials know how well they've done after every week? "There's going to be a grading report that goes back to each official and the crew chief," Frump told me. "You're going to get downgrades. Those are the ones that are most obvious, the ones where there should have been a call and you didn't make a call."

I don't know about that. If you misjump, you could kick the center in the head on the way up or rake your cleats across his back.

I'm fine with outlawing it.

I'm suggesting that NE & Denver quit paying off refs that's what I'm suggesting.

It's dumb to get rid of the leaping on FG's. Taking away fun plays don't make the game better morons.
