Paul Ryan is a superstar

He's giving a good presentation on GOP efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare right now. It's amazing that there are members of the House (notably members of the freedom caucus) who don't understand the Senate concept of reconciliation. The freedom caucus, Rand "grandstand" Paul, and the most moderate senators had better not screw this up. Donald Trump needs to be prepared to hold their feet to the fire.

PPACA specifies that EHB shall include at least the following ten categories1

Ambulatory services

Emergency services

Hospitalization

Maternity and newborn care

Mental health and substance abuse services

Prescription drugs

Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices

Laboratory services

Preventive, wellness and disease management services

Pediatric services

HHS has discretion of fully detailing the coverage benefits, but the law mandates it reflects coverage mirroring at minimum what is the average benefits coverage for employer sponsored plans.

He can't just gut them because they are mandated and have a frame of reference for meeting a threshold between what employer plans average of benefits coverage and cost burdens would dictate.

He could weaken them but not strip them and he doesn't have the authority to change the categories.

Im amazed at the dems as this process moves forward. They are the huge proponents of Government health care at any cost. Obama Care is a disaster and unless it is fixed it will totally crash and we will have nothing. Yet they will bitch and moan over any changes that are made and dis absolutely zero to amend or fix to repair ObamaCare. The entire thisng should never have been put in place to begin with. But Dems need to recognize once again, they create a pile of shit and the R's somehow have to come clean it uo while they whimper by the side of the road.

"Conservatives" in favor of mandating pre-existing condition coverage.
It's an easy way to spot the phony ones who hated Obamacare mostly because of Obama.

The categories are fine. Weakening the specifics is also adequate. I don't know if Hewitt's idea is workable, but the problem (from my POV) are the specific essentials that the Obama administration created and future liberals would want, not the far more modest essentials that a conservative administration would support.

This attitude will have democrats back in power in no time. I guess the bright side is that Direckshun won't need more moderation any more.

The Take no prisoners and give nothing up approach of the hard right could do exactly that. Obstructionists dont bring a lot to the game if all they do is stonewall and make news sound bites.

I don't see a "no prisoners" approach on the other side as you claim. They just want certain things— that will actually help make it more affordable while preserving a Constitutional right. If they had a "take no prisoners" approach there would be no replacement at all. Yet, you can't see that. I figured there was going to be some haggling over whatever was devised. There's nothing wrong with that as that's supposed to weed out bad parts of legislation. You want to pull-off what the Democrats did and shove it down everyone's throats whether it's a valid claim or not.

Just take a look at the mandate, instead of using some broad-based cliches: The reason it made it through the SC by Roberts is because he eventually bought the argument it was a tax and the congress could tax. Now that it's not paid to the govt, but to private industry instead, it will just be challenged in the courts all over again.

If you actually think Democrats are going to be willing for citizens to pay that mandate penalty to private corps, you're out of your mind.
