Mals' Chiefs: A Madden Franchise

Fed up with losing in the playoffs? Want to draft a QB? Want to fire Andy Reid?

The Chiefs won't do it, but I will.

Tonight I dusted off my copy of Madden 2008 for the PC, grabbed an updated roster and off we go!

First order of business: simulate the 2015 season. Stop worrying. Everything is fine.

Oops. We lost in the divisional round again.

Your Super Bowl champions:

Onto the offseason!

I'll post retirees, who is cut/resigned, and if there are any intriguing fake quarterbacks for selection in the 2016 draft.

First order of business: CHANGE THIS OFFENSE.

The new GM demands an experienced offensive coordinator who is focused on quarterback play. The Chiefs hire MIKE MARTZ. The west-coast, sideways bullshit offense is GONE.

Andy Reid remains the head coach, but Martz will run the offense.

Can Alex Smith run it? Offseason reports from Kansas City indicate Smith, now 32, is slowing down a bit.

"Yeah, he looks slower," said Martz. "Big deal. I don't want my QB running around, anyway. If this team is going to take the next step, we must improve QB play from the pocket."

In other news, a rash of superstar players have retired! The league says goodbye to:

Peyton Manning
Tom Brady
Carson Palmer
Drew Brees

Can Alex Smith and the Chiefs take advantage of the void in the AFC? No word on who the Broncos and Patriots expect to take over at QB.

The Chiefs have a huge lot of players hitting free agency.

The exception: Tamba Hali. He takes a hometown deal rather than hitting the open market.

Free agency...a mixed bag for the Chiefs.

Eric Berry, Charcandrick West and Demetrius Harris were the only players the Chiefs retained.

Sean Smith was lost in a bidding war to the Vikings, and while the Chiefs were scrambling to replace him, Jaye Howard also got away to the Cardinals.

The Chiefs chose not to re-sign aging ILB Derrick Johnson, who joins the Browns.

Wins for the Chiefs in free agency:

1. ILB Brandon Spikes replaces Johnson
2. RT Austin Howard replaces Donald Stephenson
3. LE Stephen Paea replaces Mike DeVito
4. CB Sam Shields replaces Sean Smith
5. WR Tre McBride replaces Jason Avant
6. ILB Zach Brown replaces Josh Mauga, who was cut.

The Chiefs will look to the draft to replace backup QB Chase Daniel and a handful of other roster rabble.

Needs for the Chiefs in the draft: QB, WR, SS, RG, NT

In other free agency news:

The Patriots made the biggest splash of all, signing disgruntled Lions receiver Calvin Johnson. New England signed Nick Foles to lead their offense with the retirement of Tom Brady.

Division rival Oakland made a huge upgrade by stealing cap casualty Earl Thomas III from Seattle.

Stay tuned as the Chiefs head into the draft. Is there a QB prospect? Will the Chiefs consider trading up?

For the 800th year in a row, the Chiefs did not draft a first-round quarterback.

But...what an amazing haul.

Knowing his team needs a WR and a big-time playmaker with Jamaal Charles hitting 30, GM Mals makes a bold move: he trades up from 28 with the Minnesota Vikings, getting the 17th pick and takes...

What a beast! Standing 6-5 and weighing in at 245 pounds, there isn't an inch of fat on Chris Lamont, who is immediately one of the fastest WRs in the league.

"This was no a brainer for us," said Mals. "We lost LG Ben Grubbs in the deal, but who needs a 33-year old guard when you can get Megatron II? Now it's on the QB to get him the ball."

The only concern with Lamont: severely injury prone. We'll see how this plays out with Martz sure to increase KC's passing attempts.

Overall the Chiefs got quite a haul of speed in the draft. Their second round pick will immediately start at strong safety. Their third-round pick will provide depth at CB and return kicks and punts. The rest of the draft provides depth, value and most importantly: speed.

Chris Lamont in action against 2nd round pick Keith Rhodes.

The top pick in the draft: QB Derek Perry, who went to the Texans. The Chiefs did have an opportunity to select talented QB Ronnie Moore, a first-round prospect who fell all the way to the Chargers in round 3 because of his tiny 6-foot frame.

Instead the Chiefs took CB Tai Campbell, who won't even start in the nickel. Chiefs fans are not happy.

The Chiefs released Chase Daniel (nobody wanted him in free agency, either) so the QB position has to be addressed in free agency/trade.

Your new Chiefs backup QBs:

Logan Thomas - 3 years, $3.02 million.

Garrett Grayson - KC sends De'Anthony Thomas, Albert Wilson and a 4th rounder to the Saints for their 2015 third round pick.

Grayson and Thomas will battle in preseason for the backup job to Alex Smith.

Smith, Thomas and Grayson all have three-year contracts.

Other Chiefs roster moves:

LT Eric Fisher signs a 7-year deal worth 44.6 million. Fisher was due to hit free agency next offseason, and this saves the Chiefs about 3 million against the 2016 cap after their spendy free agency period. We were right up against the cap.

Chiefs use the room to sign:

S Tyvon Branch
LE DeAndre Coleman
NT Terence Cody
SS Shamarko Thomas
And two undrafted rookies to provide depth at RT and NT.

The Chiefs new third string NT is ****ing HUGE:

Onto the preseason! The Chiefs face Washington, Seattle, the Rams and Saints.
