SACRAMENTO — Sources confirm that the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is working a significant break in the search for the East Area Rapist.

A possible arrest in the decadeslong case may have been made. The department said it hopes to release further information Wednesday.

Police believe the East Area Rapist or Golden State Killer was responsible for 12 homicides, almost 50 rapes and 120 home burglaries that spanned a decade starting in the late 1970s in Sacramento County.

“It is the most prolific unsolved serial killing case probably in modern history,” said Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert.

FOX40’s own “Exposed: East Area Rapist” podcast covered the cold case through interviews with victims, their families and the original investigators.

Yeah and he got fired for shoplifting dog repellent and a hammer. Didn’t raise a stink about it...just left the force without a struggle. Likely didn’t want it to be looked into any further.

The ID Channel ran a 4-part series on these rapes/murders back in March. They started their production in mid-2017. It had all sorts of details with the main investigators in focus and victim interviews. It will be interesting to see if that played a part in someone stepping forward.

The theory was that the perp had a military or law enforcement background since he knew how to avoid pitfalls of a common criminal.

He was also suspected to be in real estate or the building trades that took him away from Sacramento so he could rape and kill in SoCal. Many of the areas where he attacked were near new developments.

I read a couple of stories and no details about his life have been released.

Yeah, I'm curious about the real estate connection too. Have they said what he did for a living after getting fired from the PD?

That was specifically asked at the press conference, but they said there are lots of gaps in the timeline still after the firing in 1979 up to the current residence where he has been for 30 years. Sounds like they are still sorting a ton of case information from all over the state and a full timeline will be coming later after they connect the appropriate open cases. He said it is at least 10 different agencies sharing and lining up the information.

I had a fellow on my crew that had a creepy fascination with serial killers. This dude knew it seemed every unsolved suspected serial killings all over the country. He would bring books to read at lunch on serial murderers. He was a weird little dude he was always sipping on grape juice out of his lunch bucket I suspected it was spiked but its a personal space so I couldnt check it out. He got busted on a construction job they called random screening. He blew twice the legal limit got warning and put on mandatory substance abuse random screening that he failed at work again and was fired. I always wonder if he went on a killing spree afterwards. Al Bundy did you ever work as a Land Surveying instrument operator?
