After Tennant (which for me was the high point) it was pretty joyless...

I liked Matt Smith fine, but his companions needed swapping out much sooner than they did. It started to become the Amy Pond show instead of the Dr. Clara might be my favorite companion, but not fond of the new dr or his sonic glasses.

I started watching it because it's on BBC when I get ready in the morning.
There's no question that Tennant has been by far and away the best Doctor. Smith was good in his own way as well, though it did get a little Pond heavy. I actually don't think Capaldi is bad. They can't have just kept with the same 'style' of doctor, IMO. They needed a guy that was a little more seasoned and professorial. The problem is that the present companions !@#$ing suck. We went from Clara (who was awesome; best since Martha Jones) to a goofy bald alien and a PC police minority lesbian? Ugh...whatever. I'm nowhere near as versed in the lore as most are because I just watch one episode and then the next morning I've missed the next 2, so I see every third episode and don't have any real knowledge of what goes in the interim (this shit with Pond's daughter/dr.s wife confused the hell out of me but fine). They're just going to have a hard time ever really topping the last series with tennant and the clashes with The Master. That was just good stuff right there. There really was noplace to go but down.

At first I was put off by Capaldi. Seemed too old. After watching more of him, he's got a manic quality that is fun to watch. Him riding into the arena on a tank playing rock guitar was fantastic. I definitely like him better than Matt Smith.
The new companion, Bill, on the other hand is a total blank spot on the screen. If she was deleted from the scene you wouldn't notice.

It took me a little bit to warm up to Capaldi. Overall I like him about as much as I did Tennant. And, like others have said most of the companions suck balls.

And then at the end of the world when it believes there's nothing there to see it, it resurfaces. Just a cool concept/episode and I thought Capaldi did a great job in it. That damn Robin Hood one was so bad that I almost gave up outright, but like I said - it's what's on when I'm brushing my teeth and having my morning joe.

My favorite 'regular' episode has to be Waters of Mars. You can still see that the show was wanting a bit on technical/production values but the character performances were so good that it was still outstanding. But I don't think I've seen any of the Donna episodes from front to back and only one or two of the Rose episodes, which I think are probably quite good.
I've missed a lot so I can't be too critical.

I really can't state how much I hated Smith as the Dr.
After his first 4 eps I haven't watched anything with him in it. I just can't stand him. It's like watching George McFly be Dr Who...

The problem is that I can't think of any particularly strong trait he brought to the role. Ultimately he was a beneficiary of a good companion and the increased production values/writing budgets that came with the success of Tennant's era. Just about anyone would have been able to do well there. I don't find him as objectionable as you do but perhaps because I just think a lot of those episodes were still pretty good with or without him.

P.S. John Hurt as The War Doctor kicked staggering amounts of ass.
I'd have loved to have seen what would've happened with him as a full-time doctor instead of a one-off. He was just such a great actor that he could tell a story with just his expressions. He brought so much world-weariness and inner conflict to the part he played that I think he'd have done an even better job taking the baton full-time from Tennant. Tennant's doctor left after the whole 'time lord victorious' thing and the expulsion of Galifrey so beaten down that I think Hurt would've been able to do amazing things with that role.

What killed it for me was the wait in-between. Seemed longer than normal. And I disliked the last companions. Even the ponds grew tiresome.

I liked Capaldi more in his first season when he was a grumpy old man. I thought it was great that they were doing a more distinct change in personality, as I thought Matt Smith was sort of a light weight version of Tennant. Then in his second season they seemed to want to soften Capaldi up a bit. Meh. I do like Capaldi though and I'm annoyed that they're changing doctors again. And, yeah, the wait was bullshit. **** you Moffett. Just go.
