European Vacation - Suggestions?

Alright, so my girlfriend and I are going to Europe in January. We'll be going for two weeks or so. Our main target is Paris. plan on spending at least 5 days there. Other than that we are fairly open. Leaning towards Rome and might stay with a friend of a friend in Belgium for a couple days. We are probably going to initially fly in to Dublin or London, since those seem to be the cheapest destinations that aren't freezing cold at that time. Will probably spend a night at whichever one.

Questions:

(Bear in mind I am a total European n00b, if you couldn't tell.)

I assume London is easier than Dublin as far as reaching Paris. I've heard the train is an option, but is flying best(cheapest/most convenient)? If so, is Dublin just as good?

Strong recommendations for things to do in Paris that I might not know about?

Strong recommendations for other European cities to hit?

Any good snarky comments?

TIA and Rep to any honest attempts at help. (Or particularly funny insults)

Yeah, the whole January thing is throwing me off a bit.

One thing I forgot to mention about Spain over Italy is that (generally speaking) the people you meet are MUCH nicer. Of course you have all types everywhere and it depends on your own attitude.

Vienna is my favorite city in the world. The wife and I have a dream to one day own an apartment close to the first district. Prague and Budapest are equally as stunning.

Then again, I'm a huge weirdo.

Vienna is a gorgeous city as well as Kitzbuhel and St Anton.

I've never been to Prague or Budapest but they have that old world charm, lot's of supermodels in both cities, and a real modern vibe these days. Everyone who goes tells me they have leap-frogged their old communist past by miles.

Since you're looking at the dead of winter, you might want to consider something suited to the winter. It's not cheap, but it's north of the arctic circle, and you have a chance of seeing the northern lights. Flights from UK can be pretty cheap, and it's an interesting experience, since it might be polar night up there (sun doesn't come above horizon). Beer isn't cheap there, at like $15 a beer in a bar, but the other prices will be along the lines of what you would pay in other big cities. Was there last year, didn't see the lights. But loved that city
