Dee Ford 5th year option decision looms
Chiefs have one month to decide whether to pick up Dee Ford's 5th-year option
By: Wesley Roesch | April 4, 2017 7:45 am According to Pro Football Talk, NFL teams have until May 3 to determine whether to pick up the fifth-year options for their 2014 first-round draft picks. This means the Kansas City Chiefs have a month to decide whether to pick up linebacker Dee Ford’s fifth-year option. (H/T to Brandon Kiley for pointing this out.) If the Chiefs do decide to pick up Ford’s option, he’ll be paid around $10-12 million in 2018. That’s a huge number for a guy that really has only one good season in his career. In 2016, Ford tallied 10 sacks and a forced fumble, with 8.5 of those sacks and the forced fumble coming in the span of five games. Ford was relatively quiet during the end of the season while battling with nagging injuries. Still, Ford showed flashes of what the Chiefs want him to be as an edge rusher. The question is whether he can put it all together to deserve a big payday from the Chiefs. As of today, I don’t think you can justify giving Ford $10-12 million for one season, so KC may be better off letting him play in a contract year. The flip side of course is that Ford could have an amazing 2017 season, hit the open market and test free agency. The Chiefs could then offer him a long-term deal or hit him with the franchise tag, but the tag is going to cost much more than Ford’s potential fifth-year option (most likely around $14-16 million). That’s a ton of dough. Needless to say the Chiefs have a tough decision this month. My gut says they won’t pick it up, but you can’t be sure about anything in the NFL. http://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2017/...h-year-option/ |

8 or so will be filled by draft picks this year and the same for next, so that won't break the bank.

The only way you don't pick this up is if you can sign him to a long term below market deal.
In this case I'd bet what ends up happening is he gets the option, has himself a year on it, gets franchised, and then we get to see him sign a GIANT deal about the time we let go of Houston. |

There's a lot more to being a quality OLB than simply tackling the QB 10-15 times a year. It's those other OLB duties that have me spooked about Ford. But, but, but.....he has a fantastic first step......and not much else.
Have you all noticed how little you see Ford around the ball? Seems like he's seldom "in the pile". I think Ford is a "finesse" type OLB and I'd much rather have an active, mean, dirt eating, snot-bubbler delivering OLB. But maybe that's just me. Plus, I just don't think he's totally committed to being an All-Pro OLB as evidenced by how long it's taken this guy to refine/extend his skillset. AND, he's definitely a guy I'd be concerned about as per his game going south as soon as the ink dries on a high dollar contract. Basically, I don't see this guy as a "building block" of our defense. Pass. |

They should absolutely pick up the option. I wouldn't think twice about it.

If Dee Ford was a Donk, or if he left KC to be a Donk, you would be pimping him as the second coming of Lawrence Taylor.

34 players, without 2 draft classes before they do any form of OTAs in 2018 (unless Dorsey cuts some early again, of course).
They will need to do some drastic adjusting, but they could afford Ford. As to if they should, I could tell you better after the draft. |

He's not done because you say he's done. Your the anti Nostradamus. If you are sure of it, then it's bound to be wrong.

And Ford is a good player. You take the option, give him a year to play full time, and decide if you want to sign him long term at that point. It's really simple. You act like we are discussing a team option for Ryan Leaf here

And this comes AFTER the season in which he initially injured it, got back on the field, and then tweaked it again. At this point it looks like the thing is never going to heal right. At the very least, Houston is a huge question mark. |

At the moment the most important thing is cap space.
If this saves cap space then do it. What I don't like about Ford, is his inconsistency. And it's a big problem. He completely disappeared the 2nd half of last season. He's absolutely atrocious at defending the run...he's probably one of the worst in the league at it. I think Chiefs should look at OLB in the draft. That's the real no brainer. Who the hell knows what the Chiefs will get from Justin Houston. But for now if the move creates cap space, do it.
