New Year's Mock Offseason

Sign:
Malcolm Butler, CB (NE) (ref J. Norman, X. Rhodes, P. Peterson) 5 years, $70.0 million, $15 million signing bonus, $35 million guaranteed ~ $11.0 million 2018
Christian Jones, ILB (CHI) (reference V. Williams, D. Bates, C. Robertson, etc) 3 years, $8 million, $1.5 million signing bonus ~ $2.0 million 2018
Quinton Dial, DL (GB) (ref Z. Hood, M. Unrein) 2 years, $2.3 million, $300k signing bonus ~ $1.0 million 2018
Justin Coleman, CB (SEA) (ref J. Bademosi, M. Sherels) 2 years, $4 million, $1.5 million guaranteed ~ $1.5 million 2018
Denico Autry, DE/OLB (OAK) (ref C. Washington, B. Mayowa) 2 years, $5.8 million, $1.5 million guaranteed ~ $2.2 million 2018
Trey Burton, TE (PHI) (ref L. Toilolo, M. Lewis, etc) 3 years, $12 million, $5 million guaranteed ~$3.5 million 2018

Total: ~ $21.2 million 2018

Re-Sign:
Anthony Sherman, FB (ref P. DiMarco) 4 years, $8.5 million, $2 million signing bonus ~ $2 million 2018
Tyler Bray, QB (ref R. Griffen, K. Clemens, B. Weeden, C. Daniel, etc) 2 years, $2.4 million ~ $1.2 million 2018
Rakeem Nunez-Roches, DL RFA Tender Original Round ~ $1.8 million 2018
Terrance Smith, ILB ERFA Tender ~$630k 2018
Kevin Pierre-Louis, ILB (a Zombo-esque deal) 3 years, $3.6 million, $600k guaranteed ~ $1.2 million 2018
Albert Wilson, WR (ref R. Shepard, M. Goodwin, T. Gabriel, D. Inman, etc) 3 years, $10 million, $2 million guaranteed ~ $2.3 million 2018
Jarvis Jenkins, DE 1 year, $790k

Total: ~ $9.9 million 2018

Total Cap Space needed: $31.1 + $5 million buffer + $3 million effective draft = $39.1 million

Let walk: LB R. Wilson (RFA), WR D. Thomas, DB T. Mitchell, DB S. Terrell, DB K. Acker, DB P. Gaines, DL B. Logan, OL J. Devey, OL Z. Fulton, P D. Colquitt

Other Transactions:
Trade Alex Smith, QB ($17 million cap space)
Chiefs trade QB Alex Smith to Cleveland for a 2nd and 5th round selections. Cleveland is a QB and RB away from having a solid team, but the big problems start and end at QB. With John Dorsey now in the Browns' fold, he may look to bring the stability he brought to Kansas City with him to Cleveland. The Browns would still have an extra 2nd round pick and they'd basically be giving KC back the pick for C. Erving. Not much to stabilize the position for them.
Retire/Release Derrick Johnson, ILB ($8 million cap space)
Retire/Release Tamba Hali, OLB ($7 million cap space)
Release Demetrius Harris, TE ($2 million cap space)
Release Ron Parker, S ($5 million cap space)
Release Frank Zombo, OLB ($1.1 million cap space)

Total Cap Space Gained: $40.1 million

Draft Selection Notes: 1 to BUF (2017 Draft), 5 to CLE (C. Erving), 7 f/ SEA (I. Battle), 7 f/ ARZ (M. Cooper), 7 f/ TEN (D. King), 7 to SF (K. Acker)

Draft:
2. (CLE/Smith) DeShon Elliott, FS, Texas (6'2" 210) - Ron Parker's play really fell off this year. He's been ho-hum tackling and hasn't made plays on the ball. It's time to get a stronger player back there. Elliott reminds me alot of Eric Berry in terms of having the tools to do most everything. I think, with the season he's had, he declares.
2. Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia (6'6" 245) - I'm a bit anti-project, but Carter has some very good tools for the pro game and I think he'll be a better pro player than college player. Carter was good against the run and showed he could put pressure on the QB consitently despite low sack totals. With Hali out and Ford in his final year, the Chiefs have to get a pass rusher in the draft.
3. B.J. Hill, DL, N.C. State (6'3" 315) - I love me some Hill. He's a mountain of a man with the strength to force and take on double-teams. He makes plays, especially when he gets those 1 v 1s. Good against the run and can get after the QB. Alot of talent on that D-Line, but Hill is a big reason for all the success.
4. Kurt Benkert, QB, Virginia (6'4" 215) - Chiefs have to get themselves a backup QB and Benkert has alot of traits similar to Mahomes, especially in terms of mobility and throwing on the run.
5. (CLE/Smith) Adam Breneman, TE, Massachusetts (6'4" 250) - Breneman could go earlier than this, but I think teams are going to weigh heavily his temporary retirement from football when he basically quit on Penn State. That said, Breneman is a phenomenal receiving TE that can also block pretty well. The Chiefs have to put some work into this position this offseason because the options behind Kelce are horrendous.
6. DaeSean Hamilton, WR, Penn State (6'1" 205) - Hamilton is one of my favorite sleepers in this draft. He has produced without much around him. He's got solid hands, solid speed, and good quickness.
6. (COMP/Foles) Austin Golson, OL, Auburn (6'5" 304) - Golson is a jack of all trades, but you know what that means. He's best inside at Guard or Center, so he's a natural fit to replace Fulton.
7. (SEA/Battle) Siran Neal, DB, Jacksonville State (6'0" 205) - Neal has played linebacker and corner for JSU, so I'm guessing his natural fit might end up as a SS in the NFL. He hits well and seems to make plays all over the field, plus he's solid in coverage. I read he got an invite to the Senior Bowl so we'll see what they do with him there.
7. (ARZ/Cooper) Corey Bojorquez, P, New Mexico (6'0" 210) - One of the top 5 punters in the nation in average, net average, and punts inside the 20, plus he's a lefty. Perfect.
7. (TEN/King) Curtis Cothran, DL, Penn State (6'4" 300) - Just adding another athletic D-lineman to develop. He's nothing special, but he's got some traits.

Roster (Not necessarily 53, may not include all scrubs...):
QB: P. Mahomes, T. Bray, K. Benkert
RB: K. Hunt, S. Ware, C. West, A. Hunt
FB: A. Sherman
TE: T. Kelce, T. Burton, A. Breneman
WR: T. Hill, C. Conley, D. Robinson, A. Wilson, J. Chesson, D. Hamilton
OL: E. Fisher, P. Ehinger, M. Morse, L. Duvernay-Tardif, M. Schwartz, B. Witzman, C. Erving, A. Golson
DL: C. Jones, A. Bailey, J. Jenkins, B. Hill, Q. Dial, R. Nunez-Roches, C. Cothran
OLB: J. Houston, D. Ford, L. Carter, D. Autry, D. Nicolas, T. Kpassagnon
ILB:, R. Ragland, C. Jones, U. Eligwe, K. Pierre-Louis, T. Smith
CB: M. Butler, M. Peters, D. Revis, J. Coleman, S. Nelson, A. Lampkin
DB: E. Berry, D. Elliott, D. Sorensen, E. Murray, S. Neal, L. McQuay
ST: H. Butker, J. Winchester, C. Bojorquez

Meh.

Ron Parker is somebody I would keep, and Allen Bailey is the guy I would cut for extra cap.

**** that entire FA class.

Carter is a high effort guy, but I don't think he has the ceiling in the pros. Can do much better at that point IMO.

I'd be a bit surprised if Reid makes Bray the 2. He's done everything possible to avoid that and I don't see another rookie passing him. I think they FA shop.

Don't really like the draft class either.

In another one of my mocks, someone objected we’d sign Butler because he’s cost huge money — and we’re aboit to give Peters huge money.

Gotta say I agree. Two massive contracts for corners seems unrealistic. More likely we draft one high.

I’d look for an under the radar type corner that they project will be better in our scheme than where he was

Iirc, they were in on Casey heyward when he left gb.

Butler is just ok and looks better playing for the coaches he plays for. Not sure he's an ideal fit anyhow.

Too many good corners again in the draft to justify spending big money on a FA.

I'm not really on the re-sign Peters train at this point. Let him play out his contract first, then maybe we'll talk about it.

Would not pay CB money for two safeties on one team.

I can see not liking some, but I'd be curious to know what you don't like about Justin Coleman and Christian Jones at the very least.

As for Parker/Bailey, I contemplated again throwing it out there that the Chiefs should cut both. I don't really think either one played up to their contracts once again this year.

Justin Coleman is the guy for me that I think is underrated and under the radar that could come in as a cheaper FA signing and play big.

I haven't really seen much out of Jones to make me say anything but meh. I think the Chiefs have some young options at ILB and should let them get some quality playing time.

Coleman I am actually cool with, but I can't see Seattle letting him go seeing that they are about to gut the LoB. I think he's staying in town.

I think there's a fair point on cutting both Parker and Bailey, but I think they will keep the cheaper of the two and Parker provides more versatility which is helpful for his chances of staying.

Unfortunately they can't swap everyone out at once.

Good points BB.

I do like Jones alot though, and by that I mean alot. He reminds me alot of a young DJ but I think he hits a bit heavier. The Bears reluctance to make him a starter except for via injury may have him looking to cash in as a starter elsewhere. He put up 86 tackles in 2015 as a fill-in for 13 games and 90 this year in 11 starts. The kid is pretty good. I do get it if the Chiefs go in favor of their own youth, but I don't see a player here that would match Jones' ability to step in and actually be a competent replacement for DJ. I like Ragland at the other spot a ton though.

I’m all for drafting one of the Ohio State pass rushers. Sam Hubbard or Tyquan Lewis. Both 6’4” 265 lb monsters.
