All Things Video Games & Game Reviews

Hey guys...
Thought we could use a thread to help one another out with purchasing new and used games. Now that the next gen consoles are out and the holiday season will soon be upon us, many new games are going to drop. We've been throwing 'reviews' in several different threads or making new threads for each game. I thought we might like to converge and discuss them as a whole. Whether you're on PS3, 360, PS4, XB one or even a wii, PC and Mac, this is a repository for what you're playing and how you rate it.

Let's try to do a 1-10 scale for each game. Take into account the following:

Storyline
Challenge
Replayability
Graphics
Online functionality
Downloadable content
AI/npc's
Price
Length of gameplay

You can use all or some of those as a guide to score the game. If there are other aspects you'd like to tell as about with your game, please do so. These are just suggentions.

Please note what system, (if necessary i.e. It being exclusive to a system) you're playing on and let us know what you think.

1. Sucks, I'd rather watch Brodie Croyle play as our starter. This game is dogshit.
2. Don't waste your time. It's obviously been programmed by a bunch of chimps with syphilis.
3. I'd rather eat tapioca pudding out of my grandmothers colostomy bag, then stick my tongue in her stoma.
4. Meh, there's really better stuff to do, (like waxing my pubes) but I was lazy.
5. This is kinda like purgatory. It's not the best place to be but it could be worse.
6. Not bad at all... It's like I just scored a BJ from my hot first cousin.
7. Entertaining as all hell, kinda like the feeling where you just drank enough not to puke and can still walk.
8. Buy this game, I'm super-cereal. It's got stuff that makes my nipples tingly.
9. HELL F'ing YEAH! I'd talk more about it but I'm gonna be locked in place for a week just playing this ****er.
10. This game is like godfather two and the empire strikes back joined forces to **** your face off with wow. I'm taking all of my PTO days and going on FMLA.

EDIT: We can also discuss upcoming/all things gaming in here as well.
Enjoy!

I've discovered recently that in extremely rare cases, games live up to their hype. I was introduced to Tomb Raider several years ago on the original Playstation. I remember running like mad from a ****ing dinosaur and telling people, "we've come a long ****ing way from pong and Pac Man. Well, we've come a long ****ing way from the original TR as well.
I picked up this game for my PS3 last year and loved it. I recently traded in that version for the PS4 copy and I'm glad I did.
It's even more detailed. The graphics are some of the best you'll find right now for next gen and the storyline is top notch.
I don't comment much on music in a game but the soundtrack to this one rivals any game I've ever played. Well, except for two... The Last of Us and Assassins Creed, Black Flag.

You are once again playing as Lara Croft... A smart, deadly (smoking hot) cunning girl out to save her friends from an evil cult and zombie Japanese samurai, (I shit you not). You're stranded on an unknown island that causes planes and boats to crash and become shipwrecked when they approach it. (She's really hot, btw) This is because the soul of a Sun Queen, (Freddy Mercury?) is trapped on the island and it's looking for a new host. It's mirroring the Bermuda Triangle legends. This is supposed to be a prequel to all the other TR games. (Still ****ing hot, btw)
The game is basically your classic Tomb Raider but in an open world. You are free to travel the island and complete challenges or you can just play the storyline. You are equipped with a myriad of traditional weapons... AK-47, 9mm semi auto pistol and a shotgun. You're also utilizing a bow and arrow setup as well and the game is centered around this particular weapon. You utilize it to kill enemies, hunt food and as a makeshift grappling hook. You shoot arrows into walls and zip-line around the island. This makes it very quick and convenient to get around.
The story here, (while a little awkward and unbelievable) is still vintage Tomb Raider. There are particular scenes that are gory, yet captivating. One in particular that stands out is when Croft falls into a river of blood and slowly surfaces. A little over to top yes, but still a great scene.
You've shipwrecked on this island and you're trying to get everyone out alive. Of course several crew members get picked off one by one, but you still have to try.
Navigating around the island is very cool. There are several tombs to explore and in true TR fashion, there are several puzzles you interact with in order to access them.
I can't say enough about this game. It's beautiful, challenging and the enemy AI is definitely spot on. They don't walk in a set path like most games AI. They will definitely spot you quickly and send reinforcements to kill your ass without hesitation.
There's really not a whole lot to bitch about. I think the main story is a little shorter than I'd like and the ending was a bit... Goofy?
That's TR for you, though. Paranormal shit goes on in each game. I think the developers, Crystal Dynamics have a definite winner here. It's a shame they sold out a bit by letting Microsoft do the whole "timed exclusive" thing. I know I'm not going to go buy an Xbox just to play one game. If they would make a superior product, (like the PS4) perhaps they wouldn't need to do that.
ANYWAY... I'm rating this one at a 9. If the story was just a bit longer, it'd score a 10, easily. However, not a lot of games out there right now that can compare.
It's a must own on either next gen or previous. Just a great game.
Longer? jeez, I thought it was perfect. Not even short at all. Easily a 10 for me and I'm one of the pickiest gamers out there.

Really? I beat the main mission and hit 75% completion (with all the extras I did) and beat it in just over 10 hours. It felt a little short to me is all.

I'm onto chapter 3 of Evil Within. I actually like it. I like the upgrade system, I like the sneak skill aspect of it. Graphically it's fine, not outstanding.

To me, short is all the 6 hour games out there. Anything over 10 and still have a great story coupled with outstanding gameplay I love.

I have a feeling that's going to be the consensus. Like I said, some of you will like it. I thought it was complete shit. The framerate really pissed me off.

That's a good point. I won't disagree... (****ing infamous was way too short)

I just felt like it ended abruptly. I know that there's a lot of side quests so that's a cool aspect.
I like games to go over 13-15 hrs usually. Games like TR and TLOU are right on the cusp but they can be since they are so damn good.

There you go! You're the target consumer. Yeah, this game is a masterpiece compared to the last couple RE's IMHO.

I'm really looking forward to the new silent hill game. The PT was impressive.

I've been playing the old Tomb Raiders for PS1. Mainly TR2. Still like those games more than the reboot. And I liked the reboot quite a bit.

Yup. It's got a RE4 feel. It's got some flaws so far. The combat system sucks so far without a melee weapon.

They were pretty damn awesome. I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing those. It was impressive how long those games were and how detailed on such a primitive platform.

Gonzo's Game Reviews...

Assassin's Creed - Black Flag: PS4 Edition

Ahoy you skuttle****s.
I be writin' this hear review for thee on AC Black Flag. A game about booty, cannons, ale and wench-titties. So sit back you mangy bilge rats and enjoy me writin's.

Ok... For starters:
I really actually enjoyed ACIII (the previous title) on my PS3 a couple years ago. The revolutionary war aspect was a winner in my book. While the lead character was a complete douche, the detail in the game and the storyline was awesome. I really kind of disliked all the other AC games. They have a good premise but fail in repetitive gameplay and boring stories. I just couldn't get into them. It was really the same type of missions over and over again. They also missed the boat a little on ACIII when they touted that the lead character would cooperate in large battles... He did not. This false advertisement is a cheap, shitty way to sell games.
Anyway, enough of that. Let's move forward.

Black Flag centers around fictional pirate Edward Kenway and his passion for privateering.
ACIII Touched a little on the pirating aspect with a few sailing missions. This newer game has expanded on that idea by giving you the entire Caribbean Ocean to navigate. Kenway is the captain of a ship called the Jackdaw. As you open the world up and play the story, you amass cargo and money to upgrade your ship. More cannons, mortars, strengthened hull, etc. It's a pretty awesome upgrade systems. It does get a bit monotonous having to blow the shit out of a thousand schooners, frigates and brigs before you can finally take on a Man O' War but it's worth it. Sailing the high seas and battling these ships is wonderful and I'd say it's 75% of the game. The water is gorgeous in this game and there are quite a few diving missions where you explore shipwrecks via a diving bell and weighted barrels full of air. Sharks, eels and other dangerous critters will attack you so watch your ass.
The game has so many little extras that it makes it well worth the asking price, (40 bucks new for PS4 right now). The music is excellent. Your crew sings old shanties from the 1700's that you collect over time.
What they got wrong:
Unfortunately, the game lacks in one glaring area. Enemy AI. It's the same two-three button combo it's always been when in a fight. In the previous games, you would utilize stealth a lot to get around fights but this version demands you fight each time you take a prize on the high seas. It's so damned monotonous. "Objective: kill 5 enemy crew members" in other words, wait for them to swing a sword, block, attack. Rinse and repeat.
They tried to improve on it a bit but the land missions are the same shit. Jumping in bushes, get yelled at on rooftops, "synchronize viewpoints" blah blah blah.
This aspect of the game is exactly like every previous one.
AI is stupid, wear your hood in a restricted area, sit on benches to blend in and assassinate your target. You can hunt and fish/harpoon critters for large paydays and bonuses so that's pretty damn cool.

The multiplayer aspect of this game is actually pretty entertaining. You can either play on a team and try to assassinate the others or play a free for all death-match style and move slowly within a crowd to kill your target. You can also amass a fleet of ships, upgrade them and take on other people in a huge ship battle. Pretty cool, right?
The graphics are beautiful, especially while sailing. (Next gen especially)
Water hits the deck, the storms are awesome and explosions are realistic as hell.
One thing that is glaring here, the story tries it's damnedest to once again get you to give two shits about the lead character, (or the secondaries) but they're just stale. Blackbeard was the only guy that I really liked.
So... Final thoughts. Yes, the missions are pretty much the same old stuff there. However, the sailing feature makes the game truly original. It's the best sailing/pirating game I've ever played. I just hope they stick with the feature and maybe even try some ancient Chinese/Japanese naval missions. That would be something pretty sweet. Greek or Roman, maybe? Possibilities are endless.
I'm giving this one a 7.8 out of 10. If they could improve the combat mechanics and update the game as a whole, it would be one of my all time greats. If you only play the sailing missions, it's a 10.
Good game, great graphics, ok story.
You mangy sea dogs. Now walk the plank, matey.

I loved ACIII until it got to the ships. After that I just gave up. Already know there is no point even trying Blackflag.

Really? I thought it was one of the better parts of that game.
A little oddly placed, maybe. I suppose if you're not into the whole pirate thing, you might find it a little "meh."
You should go back and give it a shot.
