Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

So much of the movie is unstated but plainly evident, making it all the more effective. I found many connections to the themes of Good Will Hunting, much recommended.

I posted about this when I saw the trailer. Looked pretty good. I liked Neeson in Batman Begins.

I'm a sucker for a good revenge movie, too. And a lone gunman.

Now they can make me cry by ending it with daddy bleeding out in his daughter's arms and begging her to run as the bad guys close in. Then dying daddy BLOWS THEM ALL AWAY IN A FIT OF SUICIDAL RAGE!

Oh man, I love that movie. I mean, by any objective standard it's a horrible, horrible film. But it's so much fun.

It's a movie that's just too ****ing awesome to make sense.

Also, I'm a pimp, and pimps don't commit suicide.

I didn't get it. Basically what I got out of it was that Texas got nuked hard, an actor escaped to Cali to make a film and the government is after him. The cast from SNL are Carl Marx cultists, there are 2 stifflers and once they meet the 4th dimension collapses and the end.

The Rock, Sarah Michelle Geller, Sean William Scott, Jon Lovitz, Cherri Oteri and half the cast of Upright Citizens Brigade. It also has Justin Timberlake who, about two thirds of the way through, breaks out into a highly choreographed lip-synching of a Killers song for no reason whatsoever.

That scene makes about as much sense as anything else in the movie. It's just a glorious acid trip of a film.

Yeah, that's about it. Plus some sort of conspiracy involving perpetual energy, covert experiments on Iraqi war vets and Kevin Smith in laughably unconvincing old-man makeup.

There is no coherent narrative, and all the characters and situations are beyond batshit insane. The dialogue is so laughably absurd that I can't help but think it was intentionally meant to be that way. When I finished the movie, I couldn't tell whether I had just seen a masterpiece or a fiasco. But whatever it was, it was mesmerizing.

Just watched "The Wackness". Could be that I'm the same age as the protagonist and it's set in 1994, but I thought it was well done. Ben Kinsley is excellent as usual and the lead did a credible job. Plus, fantastic soundtrack (Biggie, Tribe, etc).

Also, I can't recommend Young @ Heart more highly. Most pics in the "uplifting documentary" category are way too treacle-y, but this was just right. The filmmaker is a shit interviewer, though.
