Jameis Winston suspended for student union tirade

Jameis Winston suspended for half vs. Clemson over obscenity incident

By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer
September 17, 2014 11:40 am ET

Florida State announced Wednesday that starting quarterback Jameis Winston has been suspended for the first half of the No. 1 Seminoles' game vs. Clemson on Saturday for yelling an "offensive and vulgar" phrase in the student union on FSU's campus.
Deadspin collected a number of tweets from Florida State students who said they saw Winston standing on a table Tuesday "screaming" the phrase (one made popular by a series of recent viral hoax videos), which uses graphic sexual language. (Both links use the phrase and other R-rated language.)

"As the university's most visible ambassadors, student-athletes at Florida State are expected to uphold at all times high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon themselves, their families, coaches, teammates, the Department of Athletics and Florida State University. Student-athletes are expected to act in a way that reflects dignity and respect for others," Florida State interim president Dr. Garnett Stokes and athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a joint statement.

"As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game.

"The University and athletics department will have no further comment on the matter."

On a teleconference Wednesday, Jimbo Fisher said his Heisman-winning quarterback's actions were "not a good decision," per Noles247.

"We have to keep learning, keep educating, and continue to make better decisions," Fisher added. "It is something that has to be addressed ... You can't make certain statements that are derogatory, inflammatory."

Fisher indicated he had spoken with Winston about the incident, saying "everything has been addressed and we are getting ready for the game."

Winston's off-the-field actions have been the target of increased scrutiny since the emergence of a December 2012 rape allegation against the redshirt sophomore late last year, one that has led to a current code of conduct investigation by the school. In April, Winston received a legal citation for shoplifting crab legs from a Tallahassee grocry store.

Funny, as I'm certain that my football posts would count as better contributions than your insufferable droning.

It's okay though sweetie. I'm just glad I'm not on your ignore list; it was difficult without you pumpkin. I missed your musk; the repugnant stench of an older New England woman who's likely been sexually inactive for over a decade and can now spend all of her time on a Chiefs message board now that her daughter has gone to Florida State, "The Ivy School of Florida".

I have acknowledged that already tho.' Why are you even arguing it? I thought their law school was as well but wasn't sure.

Regarding creative majors, Florida has one of the best Journalism schools in the country (top-10) and their Fine Arts program is higher ranked than FSU's
Journalism is non-fiction, more about getting the story right than a purely creative pursuit.

You'll have to show me a ranking on their fine art because I've taught at several art colleges and I thought FSU's exhibits of student work were professional quality. I was impressed.

FSU is within the top 5 for creative writing and within the top ten for film, which has added an animation department. FSU also has theatre, technical theatre and dance. I sometimes work with an FSU dance grad who got a scholarship later at NYU and she felt the dance program at FSU was better. Its film school has 100% placement into the film industry with graduates working on big films.

Quote:
One thing I won't dispute at all is that FSU has a much higher ranked clown college than UF's (which is non existent).
It's not a clown college. You are simply being smug and derogatory. Have you seen the acrobatics those kids do? That's talent. However, there used to be a real Clown college in Sarasota near the Ringling School of Art that was considered excellent.

UF'ers are known to be smug, condescending and conceited. Despite the fact that those admitted chose another school for other reasons. It's what you get out of it, and make of yourself when you leave. The world of the art is very, very competitive compared to other professions.

For my daughter it was between Ringling School of Art who accepted her or FSU for creative writing and film. She choose creative writing and film ( for the writing side). I think she made the right choice for what she wanted to study. I am just not happy with the deep cuts in the program because governor Scott wanted more funds for STEM majors. I felt they had UF for that.

Oh and BOTH are considered major PARTY schools.

No way in the world is that dumbass doing engineering coursework.

Miami and Florida are both 48th in the USNWR college rankings. Free Shoes U is 95th.

Well how can a quarterback make good decisions on the field and but make such bad decisions off the field?

He is socially challenged.

My daughter houses with a girl who works at the stadium and she was writing answers for one of his tests. Or something like that. He cheats. Then again, in Freshman year, it's not like a student is concentrating in their major yet. Per my daughter, he was an engineering major. Doesn't mean he'll make it in that.

What years?

The year my daughter enrolled FSU and USF were around 60 something with UF higher. Still, it's based overall. You have to look at a college from the pov of view of your major—not overall ratings.

Regardless, it has little to do with Jameis Winston's behavior. Football is very important to the school and Tallahassee. It's HUGE there. (also at UF)

Trying to find something more on his major

Well, there you have it. Plus he plans to get his degree and stay a few more years:
Antonor Winston says his son has changed major from pre-med to engineering in the biomedical or mechanical field and that his childhood vision was to become a podiatrist.

How pissed would you be if you were a new grad with an engineering degree looking for work and they were conferring one at the same time to Jameis Winston?

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler spoke with multiple scouts who are more concerned with Jameis Winston's "issues" than Johnny Manziel's.
Brugler agrees with this statement, but adds "I don't like comparing off-field issues among prospects because each is so uniquely diff. They're lumped into similar categories and they shouldn't" be. There is SO much time remaining in the draft process, so it is far too early to determine where Winston might be selected.
Quote:
One NFL scout texted Yahoo Sports' Dan Wetzel that FSU redshirt sophomore QB Jameis Winston "keeps filling up the 'recurring stupidity' column."
Winston will face similar attention to what we saw surround Johnny Manziel last year. Their "off-field issues," which will continue to be a buzz word, are different, but that does not mean you will not see them mentioned or compared. there could be an argument to be made that plenty of over-correction is occurring in Jameis' case, however, some teams really will factor in these actions more than others.
Quote:
ESPN's Mel Kiper has dropped FSU redshirt sophomore QB Jameis Winston to No. 25 overall on his big board.
Winston started the year as the top player on Kiper's big board. "At a time when NFL teams are going to be more sensitive than they ever have been about the off-field actions of their players -- and rightfully so -- Winston has reached a point with these issues where my sense is that a number of teams would have pulled him off the board if the draft were held tomorrow," Kiper writes. "It's that simple." The evaluator does believe Winston has time to "prove doubters wrong," however.
**** Winston.
