Soon after Christmas I decided to get my sh1t together.
My father having type 2 DIABETES and suffering an early age massive stroke, pushed me beyond my normal spring diet that my family and friends laugh at each yr.
Normally I jump up to 245 in the winter probably due to depression eating due to the Chiefs and as summer nears I lose 25 pounds.
I've done this for at least 15 yrs now.
But I decided to stop this roller coaster ride and make a bigger change more of a life style change.
I'm 47 yrs old,6 foot on average 235 pounds.
My ideal weight is probably 185-190.
In January I decided to start working out with my wife which leans towards running and of course eating healthy like she always has.

Since January there are certain foods that I haven't had at all.
I haven't had Bread,Pasta,Soda,Candy,Chips,Fried foods anything made with flour so crust..pizza etc.
I've sat down my beer for the occasional bottle of wine with the wife.
I haven't pulled into a fast food place in 5 months.
Or I should say even more impressively I have when its a must pulled into a fast food joint to get the kids some fast grub when on the run.
Do you know what its like to order burgers fries sodas for everyone and nothing for yourself? When your stomachs grumbiling and you want a handful of salty fries.
What its like to go to a sports bar and have everyone around you eating piles of chicken wings nachos etc as you sit there with a salad topped with apple vinegar or something close?
To take the kids for ice cream and walk out with nothing?? no cake batter chocolate covered waffle cone with sprinkles?
At first its not easy but once you hit the 2-3 month point it actually becomes a habit.

I now stand on the scale at a current weight of 190 pounds.
A 50 pound loss in just under 5 months.
I should also tell you the weight wasnt all in my belly.
Yes I had a little bulge but when you drop 50 pounds you'd be amazed at where you lose a lot of it from.
I had no idea how skinny and toned my legs shouldve been, my old jeans look like loose sweat pants on my legs its crazy.
And no my legs didn't appear fat as heavy peoples often do..just in hindsight I guess they were larger than they should be.
The legs is what my wifes so stunned about we had no clue that was the case.
I did go from a tight 36 waist to a 32 which meant I had to buy all new pants, shorts and my Chief superoos were a tad too loose.
My shirts went from 2 X to 1 X.
And I cant explain how good I feel all the way around.
Odd when I wear a T-shirt not only does it not bulge at all but actually goes in a little when I stand up straight.
I'm being told my face looks a little different oddly enough.

Then when your at work and the ladies and even the guys are like how the Hell did you pull that off?
Just last night walking around a local festival we bumped into some people we knew and ladies were like holy sh1t you look Fantastic!
One of my wifes friends who hadn't seen me in 6 months didn't recognize me when I walked up to her at first..then she gasped.
Its fun when you reach this point.
I thought about having divorce papers served the following Monday... I kid..

But now that everyone has noticed there is an odd feeling of pressure to keep this up and not stray.

Sorry to ramble on but hell this is what this threads all about.
Well done. That's a ton of weight to drop.

I was in a similar situation a year or two ago. I wasn't fat, but I knew I needed to lose weight. I stepped on a scale at a friend's house and realized that I was 25 pounds heavier than when I graduated high school. (It's amazing how much you can rationalize away until the number on the scale slaps you across the face.)

I've lost almost all of it. Still would like to lose 3-5 more, but I'm also more put together than I ever have been.

It's great getting complements from women, but it's even more satisfying getting them from guys. When one of your buddies mentions that you've gotten into shape, you know you've made a lot of progress. A woman might notice if you've lost 5 pounds. For a dude to notice and comment, it takes something dramatic.

Keep it up (off). I feel like I've erased nearly 15 years of creeping up in weight. The last thing I want to do is get lazy and gain it all back.

Thx guys & lewdog your right the assumption that people who drop 50+ will gain it back is fact & I do so much want to prove them wrong & plan too.

Excellent job Saul Good!
And your point about it being even more meaningful/satisfying is when the guys notice.
It takes a lot for a guy to make a comment.

One of the guys I work with has a running joke going with me..
Says hes still willing to work/talk/deal with me etc..even though I'm half the man I used to be..
He finds a way to get that in daily.

I did the low carb thing once and lost a lot weight. Kept it off a long time. But eventually, (in my case at least) I did put the weight back on because the diet is so terribly restrictive

You put it back on because you ate too many calories, not because any diet was restrictive.

It was too restrictive for me.

I'm eating reasonable meals now and exercising. I've lost 22 lbs.

I still cut carbs like pasta and sugar, but eat some bread and a little rice. I also have some beer on weekends.

I came across an interesting site that gives you a good idea visually of different body fat percentages.

http://www.builtlean.com/2012/09/24/...age-men-women/

Unfortunately, I'm solidly at 25%. I would like to get to 15% someday. I'm working on it, though, and finally making some progress.

I'm around the 20% I'd say. 6'2" hovering around the 200 lb. mark. I need to lose a bit more but it's very difficult. I have a bad knee which makes high impact exercises difficult. I also travel significant time for work which means I eat out in restaurants at least 60% of the time.

Restaurant salads just don't really fill me up or satisfy me and there's generally not a whole lot of other healthy options. Anyone have any good ideas?

So I ballooned up to 196 (from 181 at my lowest). I think I was around 185 when I quit doing low carb, so I put on 11 lbs in a couple weeks.

Decided I felt like shit and looked like shit.

Back on Keto, back down to 188 and looking good.

Going to do Keto hardcore until I'm 175 then reevaluate.

It depends on how you are wanting to eat. I'm eating low calorie density foods so if I were in your shoes I would order a couple of plain baked potatoes, steamed veggies and a salad with no dressing (salad bar would be better). Potatoes are #1 on the satiety scale so are very filling but low calorie (Google "20 potatoes a day"). If they had chicken breast, tilapia or shrimp cooked without fat, that would be an option too.

Just because you're choosing from a menu doesn't mean you can't have them alter something to make it a bit healthier. If you order a burger, try getting no cheese and not eating the bun. Healthy eating is becoming a "trend" and most restaurants are probably able to meet your needs. All you have to do is ask.

Potatoes don't generally have many nutrients though, correct? I believe the skins do but I thought the innards were pretty empty. I do enjoy some good broccoli, green beans, etc. but a lot of these places put a lot of butter or other things on their vegetables to make them more "tasty".

I generally do try to order chicken or salmon. I can't have shrimp as I'm allergic to it. Salads with no dressing is very bleh to me (I'll generally get a vinaigrette). I'd imagine plain potatoes would also be somewhat of the same way. It's a very dry food that needs something to whet it up for mass consumption.

I suppose I need to learn more about healthy eating as well. Obviously I've seen low-carb, low-fat, etc. diets but I'm unsure what nutrients I might be missing with them and what I would need to eat to replace them.

I love food, and I love the different tastes you can achieve with different ingredients and spices. I don't want to be relegated to eating chicken breast, salmon, and salads just because I don't want to get fat.

Potatoes are very high in nutrition and even contain complete protein. I'll have to look for it again but I read a study a while back where two people lived on nothing but potatoes for 6 months. They were perfectly healthy and stayed in nitrogen balance the whole time (which meant they were getting enough protein to not lose muscle).

I actually like plain potatoes with salt and vinegar on them. I'll also cut them into wedges, bake them until browned and eat them with a little low sugar ketchup. That wouldn't be possible in a restaurant, though.

Interesting. For some reason I always thought potatoes didn't have much nutritional value. Learn something new every day.
