Remembering Buck Buchanan

Nice little movie about Buck I hadn't seen before. He was special. Chiefs defense was really blessed in the 1960s. Next HOF guys should be Otis Taylor and Johnny Robinson. Crime that both of those guys aren't in the HOF.

Dawson had another game to forget when the CHIEFS played at OAKLAND on 12/13/1969 completing 2 of 6 passes for 47 yards in another loss. Not exactly impressive stats from Lenny. After throwing 5 picks in their first meeting, Dawson only threw it 6 times in the second meeting? My point is that Mike Livingston is kind of forgotten in this Super Bowl winning team when he filled in for Dawson.
Livingston was a bad QB on a great team, and I've argued in the pst that Dawson should not have been the SB MVP.

My vote would have gone to Aaron Brown, who had 3(?) sacks and and terrorized Joe Kapp all day.

Kind of like when the Ravens won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer and replaced him with Elvis Grbac. What team doesn't bring back their starting Super Bowl winning QB and thinks Elvis Grbac is better? The Ravens.

Dawson had a bad knee injury early in the 1969 season at Boston Patriots. He decided not to have knee surgery or would have been out the whole year. Livingston did a fine job as a backup.

Buck Buchanan started a construction business in KC after his playing days. He got cancer at a very young age. It was amazing that as guy as big and strong as him could be felled that quickly. Otis Taylor is in that video talking about seeing Buck at the end. Otis himself has Parkinson's and has been out of the public eye for many years. Otis' sister takes care of him full time. Really a sad situation.

One of the all time great defenses that doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves.

And Buck was the anchor.

One of the all time great defenses in pro football history. I think NFLN ranked them 3rd best all time on one of their lists.

Hank Stram’s offense always got way more credit than it should have. How you could underutilized a talent like Otis Taylor was beyond me. I know he liked to run the ball but man with a guy like OT out there it was like stealing. I know the rules were different but still...

I'd really like to see an update on Otis and his situation. I read that his sister is constantly at his side preventing him from getting bed sores.
Can't tell you how many passes I caught as a kid wearing my number 89 jersey. Otis was amazing and is certainly deserving of being in the HOF.
I just hope they do it before he leaves us...

Buck O'Neil comes to mind when I think of Otis Taylor & the HOF.

I knew the name because every family member told me he was straight badass.

Anyway, Buck walked up to me unprompted and pointed at my Chiefs hat I was wearing. He said “Hello young man, I sure do like your hat. Would you mind if I signed it for you?” I’m not sure exactly what I said but it was something like “Hell yeah!” He signed it Buck Buchanan HOF.

That hat has been on lock down for years. I should pull it out and spend some time with it.
Wear it on game days to get some Chief's superbowl aura working.

That catch against fischer was one of my favorite plays in history. Beating Washington on national tv was big. I was so happy the whole country saw it.

John Hannah talking about his rookie season facing Buck....

Hannah's moment of truth came in the second regular-season game his rookie year when he faced the Chiefs' 6'7", 275-pound Buck Buchanan. "He said, 'Home Boy, I'm gonna welcome you to the NFL,' " Hannah recalls. "He's from Bessemer, Alabama. One time he actually picked me up and threw me. No one had ever done that before. Then I started trying to cut him and he just stepped over me—or on me."
