Chainsaw Question
I bought a "chainsaw" to assist me in cutting down a large bush that died over the winter. It had some pretty substantial branches that I didn't want to cut by hand, so I purchased a "chainsaw." It's just a 10 inch electric model:

I put oil in the little tank and went to town on the bush. Unfortunately, I didn't read that one has to manually press the oil button before each cut to lubricate the chain. So, the chain is now completely dull. I got a replacement chain that I think fits, but I'm not completely sure.

Does anyone have any hints or tips on how to put the new chain on without issues? I have the manual (which I've now read...) and it looks pretty straightforward, but this thing gives me the creeps.

The wife "suggested" that I pay someone to do this task, but I'm frugal and kind of wanted to try myself anyway. Obviously, she was right but I'm not going to let her know that.

Just make sure you have the teeth going the correct way and don't over-tighten. There should be some slack but not enough for it to slip off the bar.

And wear leather gloves if you have them. It is easy to cut yourself on a new chain as they are very sharp.

1) Follow the instructions, sounds obvious but this is not one of those "wing it" things.
2) If you still have doubts search YouTube for how to videos
3) Once you have the chain replaced, and the tension is correct (not too tight, not too loose) test the saw on the ground while you are standing to the side.


Chainsaws are scary to be sure, but if I can fix mine anyone can fix theirs.

Of course having your wife with you when you test it for the first time with 911 on pre-dial is not a bad thing either.

I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed when I took it out of the box. But it went through the first few branches like a hot knife through butter. Then... not so much. The smoke probably should have been a clue I was doing something wrong.

But, it IS a saw that has a CHAIN on it. So, it technically IS a "chainsaw."

I use and maintain my chainsaws for work and they are really very simple. Read and follow that manual;-) That chain could have been sharpened to like new. Just follow directions on install and tensioning the chain and for god sake's lubricate that chain you had a bike right. You don't need that expensive bar oil just a cheap 30 weight is same thing.

1
Disconnect the chain saw power cord. Locate the guide bar and sprocket cover retaining nut on the right front of the chain saw body. Remove the retaining nut with a socket wrench and pull the cover away from the chain saw. Put on your leather work gloves before removing the chain.

Push the guide bar toward the chain saw body to provide slack in the chain. Remove the chain from the chain sprocket in the body of the chain saw and remove the chain from the guide bar.

Place the new chain over the sprocket in the chain saw body and thread the chain over the top of the guide bar. The cutting edge on the chain should point away from the saw.

4
Hold the chain near the top groove near the end of the guide bar while rotating the guide bar track with your free hand. This will rotate the chain over the remaining part of the guide bar.

5
Pull the guide bar away from the saw to take slack out of the chain and reattach the chain saw cover. Thread the guide bar retaining nut over the bolt until it is hand tight. Slowly slide the guide back into the chain saw until the guide bar retaining bolt lock over the guide.

6
Locate the chain tension adjustment screw between the cover and the guide bar. Turn the adjustment with a flathead screwdriver clockwise to tighten the chain. Tighten the guide bar retaining nut with a wrench.

Yes, I know that now... I did buy a bottle of that bar oil stuff. I was really excited about that, as I had never heard of it before.
