FOOD: Cooked Versus Raw

I was making myself something to eat yesterday and I had a random thought about cooked/raw food items. I don't mean obvious things like cooked/raw chicken. Mostly vegetables and whatnot. There are certain foods that I only enjoy cooked, but not raw. There are certain foods that I only enjoy raw, not cooked. And then there are certain foods that I enjoy either cooked or raw. Also there are food items that I just won't eat. Something about the taste or the consistency usually.

Cooked But Not Raw:
Cabbage, Carrots, Onions

Raw But Not Cooked:
Tomatoes, Cucumbers

Cooked Or Raw:
Mushrooms, Bell Peppers, Apples

Will Not Eat:
Beets, Coconut

Is this weird or is this common?

Never cared for raw fish.

Love cooked seafood of any kind.

+1 on the chocolate chips.

Back in the 60's mom got tired of my sister and me stealing chocolate chip batter before the cookies were baked. Her solution was she laid out the recipe and told us we could make as much as we wanted. She even helped us do it.

To this day I can steal one small spoon of uncooked batter but now I much rather prefer a baked cookie.

I've always wondered about this. Cooked or raw, the food should essentially be mush by the time it reaches your stomach anyway. What's the difference?

isn't there a difference between cooking veggies ie steaming/baking them vs microwaving foods in general, in regards to nutrient loss?

That isn't actually true particularly with things with lots of fiber or a hard outer coating. Cooking actually starts the digestion process by softening and breaking down food so when it hits the stomach and intestines the digestion goes quicker and it can get more since it doesn't have to work harder to break down the food.

Cows and humans both eat grains. Cows have two stomachs just to break down the grains and get nutrition. Humans simply cook the grains. Every human culture cooks their food. The ones that didn't, died out.

So eating potatoes raw is a thing? Just hadn't considered it before because I haven't found myself starving and that was the source of food.

Raw taters taste completely different from cooked ones, regardless of the variety. My main complaint with eating them raw is they are very hard and can cause teeth/gum pain if you try to eat them like an apple.

On a side note, a study was done that showed if you have no sense of smell potatoes and apples taste the same.

I haven't eaten them in years, but when I was a kid my mom would often slice a raw potato and put salt on it as a snack. I remember them being quite tasty.

Yeah boiling in water and microwaving are the worst two.

Downside of boiling makes sense but how does microwaving degrade nutrients vegetables? Agree its obviously not the ideal way to cook them but can see some use of microwave steam bags.

Before I met my wife seven years ago, I hated all vegetables. I have slowly increased my veggie intake.

I'll eat carrots, squash, zucchini, onions, green peppers but only cooked. Everything else sucks. Although fresh green beans are quite good after they get steamed.

Lettuce can suck my balls.

I will say Ruby Tuesday's salad bar is legit. Bout the only time I will eat a salad.

I was never a fan of salad until I realized it was because lettuce was the problem. Many other greens I like but **** standard iceberg lettuce.

It's not. She's completely full of shit. She's referencing a ridiculous mindset pushed by the Food Babe, that ignorantly humps the idea of "Natural" or "Raw" food. And the microwave ruins it and even add carcinogens. But science does not back it up.

Here's a nice article on the matter, from a reputable source, with lots of links to actual scientific studies showing that microwaving doesn't degrade nutrients, and is in fact one of the best methods of preserving nutrients.

https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/mic...and-nutrition/

Quote:
According to the method of analysis chosen, griddling, microwave cooking, and baking alternately produce the lowest losses, while pressure-cooking and boiling lead to the greatest losses; frying occupies an intermediate position. In short, water is not the cook’s best friend when it comes to preparing vegetables.
