Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

Totally agree. I like how Ned made sure his sons were prepared for the harshness of Lordship and made them watch him behead men, and in the end, the children he didn't prepare for it, Arya and Sansa, were the ones who were present for his own beheading.

I like book Jon Snow a lot. They've made him more incompetent on the show which is a little annoying.

On the other hand, I didn't like book Robb very much, but I like show Robb a lot more. And I despise book Tywin, but the show has made him a little more likeable.

In the end though, Arya, Tyrion, Jon Snow, and Dany are still my favorite characters from the books.

Agree on Robb & Jon. I liked Tywin in the books and like him even more on the show. He is the patriarch of a dynasty and doesn't equivocate on his beliefs no matter who you are.

You have to respect the hell out of Tywin.

'Like' isn't a word I'd use - he's clearly something of an unmoving asshole. I mean c'mon - Tyrion's 'marriage' and his reaction to it was so unbelievably cruel and for so many reasons. He obviously takes some delight in terrorizing Tyrion and some of his actions while he was Hand under Targaryean where pretty unacceptable.

That said - it's not like he was born on 3b and thought he hit a triple. The dude is a legitimate powerhouse. And question his methods if you will, but the results are pretty stellar.

I guess if Tyrion is a favorite, then it is hard to like Tywin given how unbelievably cruel he was to Tyrion with regards to Tysha (Tyrion's ex-wife). There are other instances of Tywin douchebaggery as well, but this is the non-spoiler thread, and I think that is the only one covered on the show so far. Oh wait, Tyrion did tell Varys in the last episode about how Tywin put Tyrion in charge of all the toilets and drains in Casterly Rock as his big role once he came of age. Tywin is a Douchebag.

His results may be stellar in terms of weilding power and money, but I am not one who thinks the end always justifies the means, especially when it comes to your own children.

I suppose Westeros is a cruel place though. Tywin never went as far as Sam's father, Lord Tarly, who basically told Sam he had to join the NW or else he would die from a hunting "accident" very soon. Ouch.

I enjoy Tywin's character, I respect his achievements and demeanor so I have to say I like Tywin. He, like everyone else, is a product of his environment. In that land and time you don't take and hold what he has by being soft.

I dont understand the mom giving up Kingslayer. Surely she knows they wont make a deal or will screw her or Kingslayer kills his captor and goes free. Going to make her son lose face. I guess it must be some sort of story line. Although we always need more Kingslayer scenes.

We need more imp scenes too. I absolutely love every scene he is in.

What I think kind of gets lost is that she's worried that they can't keep Jaime alive in their camp. Just prior to her freeing him, a drunken Stark supporter had stumbled into Jaime's cage to try to kill him. She thinks that someone in Robb's camp will eventually kill him, which will doom her children. So, she wants to get him out of there and get a trade done while he's still a living asset.

That's how I read the TV series at least. I can't remember if that was the same in the books or not.

Yeah, that was the idea. Jaime wasn't going to last in that camp much longer.

Plus Littlefinger told her that Tyrion said he would release the girls in exchange for Jaime, and Tyrion sent her Ned's bones as a good will gesture. I think she holds hope that Tyrion will do what he said he would and that Brienne will be able to bring the girls back to her.

The main difference from the books, and it is a significant one that I don't know why they changed, is that: (spoiler tagging just in case people don't want to hear book differences, but it is not really a spoiler in that there is no info on events not already covered on the show)

Spoiler!

It was. They were pretty sure he was a dead man walking in the camp so she sneaked him out of there.

It was pretty much the last straw for me on Cat Stark. Frankly, I gave up caring what happened to her after that stunt.

Thats cool information. No spoilers but how the book treats events up to this point. If they would have done it that way I'd have more sympathy for her releasing the kingslayer.
