Arizona Court Orders Christian Store Owners to Make Gay Wedding Invitations

PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona appeals court on Thursday upheld a Phoenix anti-discrimination law that makes it illegal for businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples because of religion.

The ruling comes days after the U.S. Supreme Court sided with a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The high court found Monday that a Colorado civil rights commission showed anti-religious bias when it ruled against Jack Phillips for refusing to make the cake at his Masterpiece Cakeshop.

The decision, however, did not address the larger issue of whether a business can invoke religious objections to refuse service to gay and lesbian people.

In the Arizona case, the state Court of Appeals sided with the city in a lawsuit first brought in 2016 by a wedding invitation business, saying the ordinance is constitutional and does not violate freedom of religion or speech....more...

I feel like I should point out that the dildos would be in a 'crossed swords' formation. Otherwise they're just dildos on a cake.

I get the libertarian market point that it only costs the Christian baker market share and therefore money. He sounds like a devout person and such people don't just make choices based on mercenary values.
Fair enough to your first statement. The question is why someone so devout would choose to deal with the public. If they are that reserved in their faith they should've considered that they may have to see a situation like this and altered how they operate their business. Or they just should've said that they didn't have the time or come up with another excuse instead of going out of their way to say I can't because of my personal and private beliefs conflict with your personal lifestyle

But once they have it delivered or they haul it out of his shop, then at least he wasn't the one being asked to put something on it that he considered against his religion. Or even if they did it in front of him, he wouldn't be the one creating that message then; tho' I would imagine the cake would be boxed up or delivered in a box. That's the point is it not?

Then they would have gotten away with lying to get a wedding cake, right?

Ketchup on a hot dog isn't gay, but it is an abomination.

You're being ridiculous now. It's no where near comparable, logical, or apples and oranges. Most don't consider ketchup as gay. If some odd ball does, then I doubt he'd be taken seriously especially by the courts.

You have some odd positions for a libertarian. Sure you're not on the left?

Wedding invitations have sexual orientation?

I didn't know they even had sex.

I think you need to do a poll. Ask the residents of Chiefs Planet if ketchup on a hot dog is normal or gay.

The carts his. The hot dogs are his. The condiments are his. He probably had to pay in order to get a permit to operate his business on the public street

You're reading my political affiliation based on hot dog ketchup? Did you use your Ouija board for that or did you go with tea leaves?

"I want to buy a wedding cake, and I'll top it myself" isn't a lie, in your example.

Okay, hear me out. I think this example is comparable:

Some Christians, aren't fond of witchcraft or sorcery because it's Satanic or some such belief. Some won't even celebrate Halloween for this reason. What if someone who is a serious witch, not someone just dressed up for Halloween, and they wanted a cake for some witch celebration or something like that. Say a cake for another witch's birthday. I can see that kind of Christian refusing to make that kind of cake too. I think they have that right under the Constitution too.

The libertarian right and the libertarian left. I'm not sure if there are just libertarians anymore or if there's such a thing as a libertarian center

I would call it a lie by omission if the customer knew that the baker refused to make gay cakes.
