New KCI terminal wins in a landslide

Surprised by how overwhelmingly this vote was for in favor. wow

Quote:
After years of waiting, in a historic vote, a new Kansas City International Airport has finally been approved.

Voters turned out at the polls Tuesday and voted overwhelmingly to approve the construction of a new single-terminal KCI.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was the vote spread in Clay County.

Clay County voters are among the most skeptical in the area. With 100 percent of Clay County Precincts reporting, yes votes took the issue in the county 71 percent to 29 percent against.

Numbers were similar in Platte County with 74 percent of voters in favor, and 26 percent against.

I've flown into a LOT of airports in my life

POSITIVES of KCI:
1. Quick in and out
2. Quiet
3. Not crowded
4. Clean for an old airport

NEGATIVES:
1. Few amenities
2. Few bathrooms
3. Terrible layout
4. Hard to get a taxi
5. Old and no high tech
6. Closes down too early

Well at least its not a terribly stupid idea. A costly one yes, but its not something ridiculous like the KCstreetcar, PnL, a rolling roof to cover the TSC, or just an entirely new baseball stadium downtown that benefits very few people. At least this will or should benefit anyone who has to fly (hopefully). The next push is going to be a rail system that takes people from downtown to the airport. <---- dumb

You could expand the terminals to add amenities and give the place a refresh without a billion dollar boondoggle that ruins the experience for the city's residents... the people the city government is actually supposed to serve.

Obviously, this isn't about serving the city's residents, it's about generating revenue for the city government to spend.

I voted No on it but I figured it would pass anyway as Kansas City seems to pass anything with a tax increase on it, and yes before its built Kansas City will be asked to pony up money to get it built.

The days of going in and out of the terminal with ease will be over soon enough.

I dont know what turnout was like but when I voted I walked in filled out ballot walked out.

I think with all the polling folks figured it wouldnt pass and stayed home. Bad mistake and if you believe your tax dollars wont pay for it your in for a surprise.

I have never flown out of MCI but I am supposed to next week. I'm just hoping they haven't started tearing crap apart that fast.

I haven't followed this deal very close, but if no tax dollars are supposedly involved, why did the people need to vote on it? Voters approved construction is all it says in the OP. If it's not public money, why does the public have any say?

The claim is it will all be payed for by usage fee's

They haven't even settled on a design your fine any real contruction wont begin for nearly a year. You may see surveyors measuring up stuff doing a complete architectural survey for design purposes.

They already did a remodel in 2004 and now they have 1 terminal that they closed.

Also the original push for a new terminal was started by the resident airlines specifically SW. I believe they offered to pay for it all and pretty much told them to do something or we are cutting flights.

This article gives some background.
http://www.startlandnews.com/2017/11...the-breakdown/

Also see this article from 2014, which talks about the City Council passing an ordinance that requires voter approval to demolish, replace or construct passenger facilities at either KCI or the old downtown airport. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...lDZY-ODKxK3xIo

I for one am shocked that a company wants the city to pay for a brand new facility for them to conduct business in.

If this were a billion dollar TIF for an office complex, people would be calling it corporate welfare.

SW was never going to cut flights the airline business is ruthless. They know full well they cut flights someone will gladly step in to fill the void.

That wasnt a remodel more like a fix things neglected and also meet TSA standards.
