National Review: Ocasio-Cortez: The Electoral College Is a ‘Scam’

Quote:
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Monday called the U.S. Electoral College “a scam” that negatively affects minorities...

...“Due to severe racial disparities in certain states, the Electoral College effectively weighs white voters over voters of color, as opposed to a ‘one person, one vote’ system where all our votes are counted equally,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Could you imagine if we had this kind of democracy-altering ‘fairness’ provision for literally any other group? If we weighed, for example, black and indigenous voters more because of unfairness?”...

One thing that I've never really understood about the EC is that most states don't apply a percentage of total state popular vote to the EC votes. I understand that a few states actually do this. Would it be a bad idea and simply give the election back to the winner of the popular vote? I understand the purpose of the EC is to prevent the large population centers from controlling elections however using MT and CA as an illustration of how the system is biased seems crazy. It takes 18 MTs to equal one CA and people whine about the rural population being over represented? Where do they think their food comes from?

You're arguing with people who don't think states should have equal representation in the Senate.

Its that way by design. The Founding Fathers had a vision for something that would work, and was unlike all the other bullshit going on in the world. What they created truly is a work of art. Sadly though, as white ribbons are issued, we distance ourselves from what is basically a timeless and prosperous system. When its gone, its probably gone forever...at least until a few truly gifted people once again say "**** it, we'll make our own place" again.

The way I'm reading this thread, most people do stand with the POTUS. The Electoral College IS a disaster for democracy. But that doesn't pertain to the United States because we are a republic.

Even back when Trump was a Democrat, he had the correct answer/attitude. He just didn't realize it

This is true. The only way it could happen is if a number of small states vote and ratify against their own interests. Which seems highly unlikely.

You know, after thinking about it, pro Electoral College should be the liberal stance.

Democracy is in essence, 2 wolves and 1 sheep voting on what's for dinner. The sheep is an under represented minority here. Liberals all claim that bleeding heart love for the minority/little guy. The Electoral College at least attempts to better represent that little sheep. Shouldn't liberals be screaming love for the EC from the rooftops?

The EC doesn't protect "minorities." It provides arbitrary weight to the votes of people who live on one side of a line in relation to the people who live on the other side of the line.

Nice try through.

Yes, it would be a bad idea. That would be mob rule. All 300 million of us would be governed by an Executive elected by a few million from Los Angeles County and New York City. Think about it, the people who give us Maxine Waters and Occasional Cortex would elect our president, forever.

That is NOT what I asked...

I must have had a brain cramp or removed something... Jeez, I'm losing it... I was considering would it be a bad idea for states to proportion their EC votes based upon the popular vote in their state. I think someone came in and changed my text while I was away. To me, this is really the definition of not being represented, 60% of the popular vote = 100% of the EC vote seems just wrong.

they like the idea of NY and California electing a president because NY and Cali share their same beliefs.

Flip it; what if California and NY were pro gun and anti-abortion .....

you bet your rear end they would be screaming against popular vote.
