Jamaal not reporting to camp

Per kctv5

Contract possibly

http://www.kctv5.com/story/26085982/...-training-camp

Chiefs star running back Jamaal Charles won't be showing up Thursday for training camp in St. Joseph until Kansas City ponies up more money, KCTV5 has learned exclusively.

Charles is the Chiefs top offensive star, but 10 other running backs have a higher base salary.

And he wants more money and is prepared to hold out as long as it takes, a source tells KCTV5. Charles in the middle of a six-year, nearly $28 million contract.

He makes about $9 million per season less than Minnesota's Adrian Peterson who has a 7-year, $96 million deal. Detroit's Reggie Bush and Baltimore's Ray Rice also make more than Charles.

The Chiefs won 9 of their first 12 games and made the playoffs. Charles touched the ball 85 on 85 percent of the offensive snaps

The Chiefs did not have an immediate comment.

If Charles was in his 3rd or 4th season it would be tempting.....but dude is in his 7th season. Extremely risky.

K.C. hopeful Charles reports on time

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs have discussed a new contract with running back Jamaal Charles, sources said.

Charles has the option of holding out from training camp if a new deal is not reached before then but the Chiefs believe he will report to camp on time. Chiefs' veterans were to report to training camp at Missouri Western State University on Wednesday. The first training camp practice is Thursday.

Charles, 27, has been the engine behind the Kansas City offense for the last several seasons but he had what may have been his best season in 2013. Charles led the Chiefs in rushing (1,287 yards), receiving (70 catches) and touchdowns (19), setting career highs in the last two categories.

Charles accounted for 35.3 percent of the Chiefs' yards from scrimmage last season, highest in the NFL followed by Chicago's Matt Forte and Philadelphia's LeSean McCoy at 30.8 percent.

Charles' contract, signed in 2010, is a relative bargain for the Chiefs. He is scheduled to make $3.9 million from the Chiefs this year, including a salary of $2.65 million, a roster bonus of $1 million and a workout bonus of $250,000.

The contract expires after the 2015 season. Charles is scheduled to make $6 million next year.

As comparisons, the Bears will pay Forte $6.9 million this year and the Eagles will give $8 million to McCoy.

Knile Davis and rookie De'Anthony Thomas are among the running backs the Chiefs have behind Charles on their depth chart. Davis rushed for 242 yards as a rookie last season, but his per-carry average of 3.5 yards was well below that of Charles (5.0). Davis also rushed for 67 yards after replacing the injured Charles in the playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Thomas, a fourth-round draft pick from Oregon, is fast but at 174 pounds isn't suited to playing every down.

The Chiefs are also facing contract issues with two of their other key players, quarterback Alex Smith and linebacker Justin Houston. Both are headed into the final seasons of their respective contracts. Houston held out from offseason practice, including a mandatory three-day mini-camp.

Charles did participate in offseason practice.

Two guys who can't tie JC's cleats.

While RBs are a dime a dozen, JC isn't replaceable in this offense. He's Smith's security blanket and 40% of our offense.

The offense would have to change dramatically without Charles. Last I checked, we don't get to play Indy's defense 16 times this year.

Our offense played just fine without Jamaal against the Colts.

Yeah, I had to edit my post to acknowledge that it was still risky. It has to be considered differently is all I'm saying.

Faulk, the example I cited, was pretty much washed up and unable to stay healthy by the time he was 29.

The problem is always durability. I always felt charles's best attribute was not his speed, but his field vision. I have, honestly, never seen a player that fast who had that kind of vision. I think he can be a very good RB even if he loses a step or five because of it... but I really doubt his body holds up.

All the more reason I'm pissed we held up his career for Larry "I beat and point guns at women while attempting to act gansta because I'm insecure about being black man who wasn't from the ghetto" Johnson. Charles should have been starting his rookie season. I said it then and it still pisses me off.

Smart for Charles. Sux for fans.

But in the end he'll be there game 1 and if he takes training camp off it's good for him as well as Davis and Thomas.

Taking off training camp is usually how guys end up with season ending injury.

Reid's system would get roughly the same production from Davis and Anthony if Charles weren't here. It's just how his plays and schemes are designed to work. Both Davis and Anthony have more than enough speed and quickness to produce similar results with Reid's scheme.

Alex Smith needs to post in the "faith" thread. That Cutler deal he's looking for disappears if he doesn't have his security blanket all season.

Funny, because I remember us losing that game largely because we couldn't close it out.

You throw to score, and run to close. KC could not close. The defense was most of the reason, but charles was the rest.

Should we try to trade him? We are gonna suck this year, anyway, right? Why not get 2-3 draft picks?
