Off Season Lets Talk Guns, Part 2

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

That Colt Python has now made its way from St Joe to Woodville Texas. Must be a gun show seller and at the price makes me wonder why it hasnt sold. You may have dodged one here.

http://www.breitbart.com/big-governm...-1911-pistols/

Quote:
President Trump Will Permit Citizens to Buy Military Surplus 1911 Pistols

President Trump is set to sign the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, which contains an amendment that allows U.S. citizens to acquire military surplus 1911 pistols.
The sales will occur under the auspices of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which has been selling approved military surplus weapons to citizens for more than 100 years.

According to the International Business Times, it currently costs the U.S. military approximately $2 a day to store one pistol, and there are an estimated 100,000 1911s that are being stored. So that is a $200,000 expenditure the military can erase and replace with a profit, or at least of a recoup of costs, by selling the firearms.

The 1911 is one of the most popular handguns ever developed. It is valued for military use, home defense, self-defense, and concealed carry. Although the military’s 1911s were made by Colt, citizens have long been purchasing civilian models from Colt as well. These range from the basic government model to 1911s with finely tuned triggers and target barrels that allow for incredible accuracy in competitive shooting.

Kimber, Sig Sauer, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Rock Island, Springfield Armory, and others produce numerous 1911 variants for the civilian market each year as well. But through the Civilian Marksmanship Program, Americans will not only acquire a 1911, but a piece of U.S. military history, an exciting opportunity.

I've been patiently waiting for CMP to get those. I'm hopeful that I'm at the right place and right time to get one. I got lucky last year, with their M1 Garands.

I've seen forum members thinking the prices on these 1911 will be around $1500. $1500 seems high IMO. You can drop $2500 and get a really nice original one. If they are $1500, I'll save up another grand and buy one I can actually see pictures of prior to purchase.

I'm with you, I'd like to see how they came up with that.

And if they do cost that much to store, selling them for $200 would be profit.

Well, if you are lucky, you might get my old 1911 It was carried all over Viet Nam and then all over Europe. Only shot about 3000 times.

$1500 is outrageous though. I would expect these particular guns (the 1911's) to be in the $400 TOPS range. Hell, they've been in cosmoline for the last 40 years.

Not to mention that if I am going to drop $1500 on a 1911 - it will be a new Springfield. I currently own two - one a MilSpec 1911 ($500) and a 1911 Range Officer compact that I carry. It was a Christmas gift, but I believe that my Wife paid $700 for it.

Of course, if you want to drop bigger dollars, I would recommend a Kimber. But I have shot several of those and just don't get the hype for a $2,000 pistol.

Yeah, you are getting severely ****ed if you pay even half of the 1500 for a surplus 1911.

Beautiful pistols! You can never go wrong with a Sig. I really HATED it when we switched from the Colt 1911 in the Army and began using the Sigs in 9mm in Europe. It was a NATO thing back then.

But after a couple of trips to the range, I was hooked. I have owned various sigs from the 80s on...and still would bet my life on them.

This. Listen, I’d love to get one of these old US Military 1911s, but I’m not gonna spend more than a few hundred bucks on a piece of junk. On a nice one, I might spend $500. But fact is, there’s a ton of great, modern 1911s and the only reason I’d buy one of these military ones is for the novelty of it.

Anyone have any good recommendations on 1x scopes for AR's? I'm looking at the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 or the Viper PST 1-4x24. The strike eagle is $250 or so on EBay and the Viper is $400. The strike eagle looks to be real solid but weighs in at 17 oz.

I'm going hog hunting soon and plan on using the AR. Good ideas on types of ammo I should purchase? I was thinking higher grain stuff.
