That's the issue, it won't hurt. you'll just get permanent damage over the next few hours. but there are ready ways to check the glasses.

And a quick glance can cause damage.

I ran into a twenty something kid today who thought he could just wear sunglasses. how are these people so obtuse?

Yup. I am reading about this shit across multiple sites. People thinking even a quick glance is ok. It's not. Even a few stories of people decades ago who caused themselves permanent damage from the solar eclipse.

The current population is dumber than decades ago. Thousands will permanently **** themselves on this, like the kid wearing his sunglasses.

I'm not saying there's not some danger. I'm saying that everyone looks at the sun from time to time. You get some green spots for a bit, but you're fine after a while.

If you look through whatever glasses you have (not at the sun) and see anything at all, there's a problem. If you look through them and see nothing except when you look directly at the sun, you're probably fine. Just don't stare at it if you are worried about it.

You guys realize that there's not something inherently worse about looking at the sun during an eclipse compared to looking at the sun normally, right? And we have partial eclipses fairly regularly (every 5-10 years or so).

Again, you should use legit glasses and filters. No question. All I'm saying is that, if this were a HUGE problem, you'd see a shit ton of people with blindness related to the sun. Does it happen? Sure. It's just not anything to worry about as long as you're not an idiot.

The one thing I'll say that IS a huge issue is looking at it through any kind of telescope or binoculars without having a filter on the ENTRY POINT to the lens. Ever lit a fire with a magnifying glass? Think that, but the back of your cornea. Don't do that.

Of course, but I literally NEVER look at the sun normally. You said people look at the sun from time to time.....that seems odd. I sure don't.

You've never been driving and had the sun in your eyes after coming over a hill or around a corner?

I do want to be 100% clear that I'm not suggesting anyone go out without being pretty sure you've got quality eclipse glasses. Check NASA's list if you're worried. But if you're stuff's certified, it's perfectly fine.

And lew, if you're still THAT worried about it, make a pinhole viewer. It's still pretty cool to watch that way.

Does this mean you always look at the sun abnormally?

Sure and it lasts a fleeting second before I quickly turn away, almost crashing into the car next to me or veering off the road. Simultaneously yelling at my wife about locating my ****ing sunglasses or I'll go blind!!!

If you mean looking at the sun in that instance, then I am guilty as charged officer.

We are right within the 70 mile path, just like Joe is. We are so close to Carbondale IL and Hopkinsville,KY that we thought about going there. But why when I can walk right outside and see it 1 minute and 40sec.

Carbondale and Hopkinsville is 2 minutes 40 seconds, the max anybody can see it.

Hope all enjoy, wherever you are!
