Hyundai expert mechanic question

I would GREATLY appreciate true and knowledgeable advice, not any random guesses or maybe's.

I blew up my air conditioner compressor and my car was towed this morning. It's a 2002 Hyundai XG350L with 123,966 miles. They are giving me two estimates of $1,250 to get back on the road with no warranty and $1,700 to "do it right" and clean out all the metal shavings and do it the right way.

I had someone tell me to inform them to just disconnect the compressor and put a new belt on knowing I would have no A/C but the car would run.

The auto shop told me it's not possible with my car's setup.

Am I being F**ked up the arse or is that true and they can only complete something more major? The thought of spending $1250-1700 on a 11 yr old car makes me sick.

Any actually advice other than "You are being raped", "Burn your car in an AIDS tree fire", or "You need to shove antifreeze down the throat of the mechanic" is greatly appreciated!

I'm curious how you know you "blew up your a/c compressor"? Did it lock up and break the belt?

My son's Impreza runs fine with a dead a/c compressor but I don't know if the Hyundai would too.

I'm guessing it seized up, that happened in my old Voyager, it made a hell of a ruckus when it happened. Luckily it had a belt separate from the serpentine so I just cut the belt and it was fine. If it's on the serpentine he's probably ****ed.

With that said, those prices seem inflated, especially an additional $450 to flush the system. The shop he had it towed to is probably banking on him not wanting to hassle with towing it somewhere else.

I think so too. I got a quote on the Impreza to replace the compressor and refill the system (with new seals) for $600. For $1600, my kid would get to drive around with the windows down.

Tuesday afternoon my car starting smelling like an electrical burning. Yesterday sporadic white awful smelling electrical smoke that at one point poured into the car from under the glove compartment. Last night on the way home all the electronics started to fail; parking break light on, battery light on, tach stopped working, airbag light on, speedometer froze at 62, radio stuttered for a while then died, and when I got home the car would not start.

Jump stated this morning but when driving the fuel injection would work and the car died after stopping at a light.

Also, the A/C was acting funny in the last few weeks

Sounds like Bug was right- the A/C is on the serpentine belt and locks up.

Yeah you can't always bypass an ac compressor. It depends on how the belt is routed.

I'm a Service Writer and basically all I do is put together estiamtes and hunt down parts all day long. What all was on the estimate to "do it right"? I could put together a quick est and see if you're getting screwed. Its Probably Compressor, condensor, drier/accumulator, orifice tube/expansion valve, maybe a liquid line then the evac and recharge and of course labor

JFC. Sounds like you have more issues than a locked up AC compressor. All that happened when mine locked up was the belt started squealing like crazy.
