Paglia: Trump Already Headed Towards Reelection, Democrats Have Overplayed Their Hand

Camille Paglia: Trump Already Headed Towards Reelection, Democrats Have Overplayed Their Hand

Posted By Tim Hains
On Date April 19, 2017

New York Times columnist Frank Bruni moderates a 'Times Talks' discussion between legendary feminist Camille Paglia and 'Watch What Happens Live' host Andy Cohen about life in the Trump era.

Quote:
FRANK BRUNI: I feel like one can't have any conversation today, without it being at some point about Donald Trump. So I thought we'd just begin with Donald Trump.

Get him entirely out of the way.

In my world of friends and acquaintances it seems like everybody is either in near hysteria and feels like we're in the end of days. Or they look at those people and see a bunch of drama queens. I want to know where you two stand on this. What is your state of mind and state of feeling about the Donald Trump era?

We'll start with you Camille because I know you're so shy with your opinions.

CAMILLE PAGLIA: I am a Bernie Sanders supporter. I voted for Jill Stein. So I want to make that clear.

My feeling is that an election occurred.

It is incumbent upon the defeated party to pull itself together, or else we're going to get the reelection of the present administration. That's what I feel right now.

BRUNI: You feel like he is going to get reelected?

PAGLIA: Yes. The Democrats have overplayed their hand. And the -- I just can't imagine--

BRUNI: You're already betting on his reelection less than 100 days in?

PAGLIA: Yes because what the Democrats needed to do-- and the major media, Frank, needed to do was to do some soul-searching.

BRUNI: By that you mean the failing New York Times?

PAGLIA: Yes.

BRUNI: Yes, we're going to rebrand this 'Failing Times Talks.'

PAGLIA: If you read only the New York Times-- I said, 'Oh my God!' The readers of the New York Times are heading for a major, major breakdown shock if Trump is in fact elected.

BRUNI: Did you think he was going to be elected?

PAGLIA: I was the very first to call him a carnival barker, and I didn't take him seriously at all. And then, shortly after the very first Republican debate, I saw Diamond & Silk, the African-American sisters doing a pro-Trump attack on Megyn Kelly on their podcast, and I thought, I suddenly saw the populism, and from that moment forward, I could feel the momentum of it. And the New York media was in an absolute bubble about this. Let's not get started on the strategic errors of the Hillary campaign...

...

Just today I was walking by a monitor, I don't know what channel was on, but there was -- he has some slogan about jobs for America or some new plan. And I saw that chyron: 'Jobs For America Plan,' and I thought to myself, okay, it doesn't even matter if this works or not, he could get reelected because he has a 'Jobs For America' plan.

And the idea that he tricked his supporters with the whole, "I'm not just another politician", narrative.

The only good thing about Trump being president is the inevitable midterm backlash.

And if you have two bad choices, and one says she'll do nothing and the other says he'll fix everything, in four years, who's going to do more damage?

lets be clear. 40% is not majority. Majority rules and most decent minded grounded Americans sinply won't stand for what he is currently doing and what he may do in the future.

He filed election papers like two or three days after the inauguration, is what was reported. Trump has been rather politically savvy by submitting re election forms already. Hate the guy, but it was a smart move.

Way too early to tell. George Bush back when Desert Storm was going on was just assumed he would be re-elected. It didn't happen.

When Trump won, and people started blaming the media, political correctness, and SJW's for Hillary's loss I thought it was off mark. People voted against Hillary, it was pretty simple.

Now I see the brilliance in the Pubs creating that narrative to place blame on the media, etc. It gives them a defined target for the next 4 years, and allows people to build more resentment towards the SJWs, which in turn hurts the Dems. Hillary was dead, there was no reason to use her as the reason they won.

I think the story on 2016 is that the race was really decided around the time immediately after the conventions. The polls didn't shift at that moment but that was when the finger was writing on the wall. You had Hillary asking people to say "I'm with Her" - to pledge loyalty to Hillary Clinton. Trump was up there saying "I'm with you".

Trump's acceptance speech was a different person than we'd come to know to that point. He legitimized himself that night I think, I never thought he had a snowball's chance until that speech, and after that I - a never-Trumper to that point - said to myself that this was the first time we saw a DJT who could win the election.

That was the climate, really. Most people feel like Washington stopped listening to average people a long time ago. People are tired of Washington telling everyone what to think, of telling regular Americans that they're hateful bigots, of Washington only listening to elites, of Washington putting the interests of American citizens last, shipping jobs away, etc etc.

Trump may not be a great statesman but he could see that this idea, of a politically incorrect populist, was an idea whose time had come.

His campaign had a message. Clinton's campaign had no message. It was primarily concerned with pooh-poohing her various scandals. A campaign has to be about something. Hillary didn't have a message and Trump had one, so he won.
