The decline of our cites. Sadly this sort of act is not unusual anymore

Our cities continue to decline into third world status. Once we used to read of tribal behaviors and warlords in far off exotic lands. Now its available here at home on any given day.

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/new...ing/100284846/

Detroit police are poring over Facebook videos that show dozens of people cheering, laughing and videotaping a brawl between women that ended in a double stabbing.

The fight, which reportedly started over a parking space, happened Sunday evening at Rouge Park on the city’s northwest side, 6th Precinct Cmdr. Aric Tosqui said.

“It’s unfortunate that we as a society find entertainment in these kind of things,” Tosqui said. “In this case, people got hurt while everyone else stood around and filmed it instead of doing something.

“The case is under investigation, but one of the victims is uncooperative,” Tosqui said. “There were several videos posted to Facebook. We’ll be working with Facebook to gather all the videos so we can determine exactly what happened, and who was involved.”

Monday, police arrested two women, ages 21 and 22, in connection with the stabbings, Sgt. Adam Madera said.

One of the victims, a 30-year-old woman, was listed in stable condition in an area hospital. Police are working to identify the other victim, who reportedly drove away from the scene in a black Buick.

The police report was logged at 9 p.m. Sunday, although it’s unclear when the fight started.

One of the Facebook videos reviewed by The Detroit News begins with two women trading blows, as a crowd closes in on them; most of the onlookers filmed the fight amid the sound of cheers. Some stood on vehicles in an apparent attempt to get a better view of the fight.

The stabbings were not captured in the video reviewed by The News.

Oh good, so no you're the champion for the hood resident. Glad you've progressed from not understanding how an average resident couldn't afford a $300 EpiPen.

I brought up the sweet cool parts of the city because you made a blanket statement that cities are struggling because you cherrypicked two crimes in two poorly run cities. Many urban cores are thriving. Like always, many of those cities also have struggling hoods. If your only point was that hoods, not cities, are struggling... duh. They always have.

All of a sudden you're the champion for the baby momma in the hood? Yet you would take away her social services, gentrify her, and ask her to fend for herself then sneer at her if she becomes mentally ill, homeless, or addicted to drugs? Despite your accusation, I volunteer hundreds of hours of nonprofit board work dedicated to poverty causes. If you want to argue that some cities are thriving at the expense of the hoods, fine. That is a completely different discussion than claiming cities are declining because their hoods, surprise, have crimes committed there.

Despite what you've been brainwashed to believe, not all struggling people are lazy and abusers of the system. Many of them are kids who are too young to be blamed for their lot in life. Many are mentally ill and can't fend for themselves. Many are the victims of a government that failed to create opportunities for them. Many are capable of being fixed through service. And if you've actually worked with these people, you'd see that many do improve. I'll gladly sympathize with these kinds of people.

While I disagree with most of your post, this part boils my blood! Are you saying the average American is too dumb to find their own opportunity? America simply cannot survive without constant government babysitting?

The exact opposite. In many cases, people have to overcome government to find opportunities. In many hoods, the government either purposefully redlined the neighborhood or in some cases cut off access to major roads. In small towns, government has taken federal tax money and diverted federal money away from them.

But here's the rub... When populists ask to protect small town labor, they are asking for government to babysit them, while they simultaneously bash poor people on welfare. I don't get that. If you hate government, you should recognize that many poor people have been dicked over by government way more than they've been helped.

I don't think a populist group screaming for trillions in infrastructure spend, bajillions on defense spend, countless dollars on crony capitalism, and hundreds of billions on overreaching immigration enforcement while fighting tooth and nail to protect entitlements is in a position to talk about spending. And I don't think a group that supports billionaire tax breaks is in a position to yell at poor people who are also trying to get what they can out of the system to their benefit.

I don't like much federal spending and prefer much of it be left to the states. I don't like corrupt or inefficient government. But that is a government problem. Yes, there are those who abuse the system. But there are also people who are helped by it. And I'll never understand the disgust for these people given all the problems in the world.

I do. Here is the problem, in most cases all the government can do is throw money around and make a bad situation worse. The simple solution is get the government out of the loop. No help, no hindrance, just get out. Problem solved.

I tend to fall in between. I generally dislike government. Bloat, inefficiency, etc... But I also believe government helps in ways we don't appreciate. We should limit government, not swear it off entirely. Ideally, you can take out the bloat and be done with it, but I'm realistic that that will never happen. So I totally understand people in the "entirely no government" camp.

I've been on the other side of the fence as a nonprofit board member gunning for grants. Those are emotional conversations because every dollar lost is an extra person you know you can help, but can't. Literally. Despite what people think, these nonprofits can't rely exclusively on donors/corporate sponsors. So I know what will happen if we just slash apart government. As far as I'm concerned, if we're going to throw a gajillion dollars at defense with the goal of protecting Americans (knowing that some of that money will inevitably be mis-spent), then we can certainly throw a few hundred billion at helping the poor and keeping them healthy. That's a rounding error when compared to defense and entitlements.

The problem is that people who dislike government tend to then rally for more government to push their own selfish interests. Which puts government in the position to pick winners and losers, and the winners will almost always be the wealthy cronies. And that's even worse. My guy was Rand Paul before he started bowing down to the populists, by the way. If you're slashing government fairly across the board, great. But that's not what's happening. The Establishment is spending a truckload on defense, and populists want to spend a truckload and a half on protectionism and overreach on immigration enforcement.

So here's where I stand. More local, less federal oversight. Let states compete against each other instead of the government picking favorites.

I never said "all", so there's that.

The highlighted part is complete bullshit and is a primary source of deep issue in America. And "victim" is just laughable. Every one of them had a chance to educate themselves, they chose another path after hearing the "try hard in school, stay in school, and keep your nose clean" message from all the people they know are awesome. So they ignored the obviously great advice, and chose a shitty path. **** them!

And that should have only lasted one generation as the parents who chose the wrong path should clearly make sure their kids didn't follow suit; but it seems to be making it's way through generations. Perhaps it's their community organizers who are the problem.. Allowing them to feel like a victim..
