Anybody here ever actually run the 40?

Curious to see if we have any other athletes out here.

I don't have a stopwatch. Maybe I should see if one of my friends does and get some jackass to time me.

What's your 40 time?

Yes and no.

Now, granted, I haven't been in high school since 1984. But I knew a few guys that were 4.7 or faster that had absolutely no passion for any sport, whether it was football, baseball, basketball or track (myself included).

But that said, most of the guys that did run 4.7 or faster played football at the junior college level and many went on to Division I, Division I-AA, Division II and NAIA programs.

4.7 is a really fast time, and people lose sight of this because of the magical 4.5 number. To speak further to this point, there have been a number of studies in recent years discussing how many 40 times are fictitious at best in order to market athletes better.

See, I don't quite buy that.

I said it the last time we had this debate, high 4s isn't that tough if you're a light kid that's been playing sports your whole life. I was never great, but I did nothing but play baseball and football up until I was about 17, when genetics finally kicked my ass (as did breaking balls). I didn't do exhaustive training but I was fairly quick. I was just in decent shape and didn't have much weight to haul around at 160 some lbs.

The difference between the high 4s that go to play in college and the high 4s that don't are that the high 4s that play in college are 6 feet tall and weight 180-190 lbs.

It's not hard to find strong kids in HS (we had a kid that played DT the year behind me that broke the state record for the squat; ****er snapped a squat bar in the gym once). It's not hard to find fast kids in HS. But it is hard to find kids that are fast with the core strength they need to play at the next level.

Like I said, in a HS that had 100+ kids on my freshman team, along with sophomore, JV and Varsity teams, I don't know why its hard to believe that some of us played with some very very athletic guys.

I already discussed my experience at length earlier in this thread. My high school was a football factory until the head coach left for Rockhurst. The number of college football players produced during his run was pretty awesome.

Now, most of that was due to training. Kids as young as 7th grade participated in the high school weight training, running and other drills every summer. The number of guys that were in the 1,000 pound club (bench, squat and dead lift) was pretty staggering. It was a way of life.

I'm actually surprised to hear that 4.7 is a benchmark because I figured that most of the four and five star Blue-Chip high school skill players easily ran 4.7 or better.

So much of running a 40 is technique, which is why we're seeing guys running sub-4.5's these days.

Pretty simple math in terms of the percentage of HS athletes who go on to play at the college level. Those are the guys I'm largely going to identify as "very athletic."

The rest are simply HS athletes. Nothing more.

I would imagine many of us on here were college athletes. Maybe I'm wrong. I was timed in the 4.5s multiple times in high school and college. No way of knowing what I would have timed at the dome in Indy, but what else do I have to go by than the times multiple coaches timed me at?

As out of shape as I am now, I would probably have a hard time running under 5.5.

Well that kind of proves MY point. Not sure how a lefty throwing 90 doesn't get drafted out of high school but he went 3rd round and found his way to the majors...

Why? Because he's a lefty. Any lefty that hits 85 FOR REAL in high school gets drafted...

I don't think people realize how ridiculously fast 85 MPH is...

What is this guys name? I'll look him up.

Exactly. We had a mandatory summer weights program from my freshman year on. I didn't play my senior year because I just didn't feel like !@#$ing with the weights anymore...oh, and the not being very good thing.

Major schools in the KC area did not !@#$ around when it came to training. I did the minimum I had to do to get a my sticker punched before I had to go to work (insurance at $200/mo was a mother****er), but there were a bunch of kids there that were just killing it every day.

I dunno if it's a small school thing or what, but I think some people are really underestimating how hard HS football coaches will push their kids on the training stuff. Looking back on it, I regret not working harder because I can see in some of my pictures from back then that I really was in good shape, but you just don't realize how easily that happens for a 17/18 yr old kid.

Athletic stuff just comes easy at that age.

Wait until you're my age. I'm in pretty good cardio shape but I probably couldn't even break a 10.5.

It seems to go down hill fast. A couple years ago, I could still hang. Now, I just want to die when I do any kind of physical activity.

Check your messages.

He missed two seasons of rehab with both elbow and shoulder injuries (iirc), had to completely alter his throwing motion to throw sidearm and still averages 88 mph on his fastball (can dial it up to about 90).

Dontay Moch ran 4.19s in college...

What I'm trying to say is...your 4.55s were probably 4.7s realistically

Unless you really think you were as fast as Larry Johnson and faster than Cam Newton and Geno Smith.

But I suppose Dane is right who am I to rain on your glory days.

Which is what I tell my 4.7 friend who thinks he used to run 4.4s and that 4.5s are nothing special.

Denard Robinson ran a 4.43 but CPs own dirk digler ran a 4.29..

Excuse me for being practical.
