Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Told my Faither-In-Law I was thinking of getting a.12 gauge and he gave me his Remmington 870 magnum this morning. Thing has hardly been used, has a scope and a slug barrel to go with it.

Marlin model 60 .22lr semi-auto
Mossberg 702 .22lr semi-auto
S&W SD9VE 9mm
Advantage Arms Glock 17 .22lr conversion

$1450 cash
10 1oz silver coins
5oz silver bar
A couple hundred rounds of Hornady ammo in various calibers (.308/9mm/5.56/.40).
1k worth of match .22lr ammo (fed HV match)
3k worth of plinking .22lr ammo (various bulk packs)
1 boat payment (=$440)

Still have to replace 30-40 mags, an AK, and some fed bulk 5.56 ammo. So hopefully this panic period ends soon.

Well, had I known when I dropped $550 on one that I'd need to spend another $400 to truly make it awesome, I might have gone with something else. There were reasons I took it to the gunsmith beyond just getting it tricked out - primarily, on my model (XDm 9mm 3.8" barrel) the sights were off, which is apparently a common problem. It consistently shot high. Also, it takes a 19 round mag, which makes for an extra-long grip. This would make it a very poor choice for a conceal carry gun, and is the main reason I bought a new pistol for that purpose. There is also a small, cheaply-made pin in the slide that had cracked and eventually would have completely broken and caused the weapon to fail. The gunsmith saw it when he fully disassembled it and replaced it with a much higher quality pin. But I would not have known to look for it, nor did it appear broken. I don't know if this is a common problem or not, but it pissed me off.

That said, it never failed to fire, and even though the sights were off, it shot consistently. It is a blast to shoot, and if you've never fired a gun with a competition trigger, you won't be aware of trigger lag.

So I would recommend it, but I would recommend that you go with a different model - either go big (5.25" barrel, which comes with better sights), or the compact model which has a smaller grip for CC (but will accommodate extended mags if you wish to use them).

This is the model I have:

This is the larger one with the 5.25" barrel:

And this is the compact:

I am not a big fan of Glocks. I currently have a H&K .40 USP but I have had it for 10 years or so. I am wanting something a little more compact.

I have one of those, too. Great gun, but definitely not compact. I really like my new Smith and Wesson M&P 9c compact, vastly prefer it to the Glock 26 subcompact, which just has far too small a grip, IMO.

I don't know if you could go wrong with a Glock 19, though. Small enough to be concealable, but not too small.

Another thing - 9mm ammo is a bitch to find right now - you might do well to think about getting a smaller .40.

Where are you at in AK? I need to make it up there again to slay some fish.

I wish running down to Bilings was an option for me, but it isn't.

Because I know I'll be sitting on thousands of rounds in a couple of weeks, I haven't really bothered canvassing the area looking for 9mm ammo. However, every online shop I've checked is out and not taking orders, and if a large, previously well-stocked shooting range runs dry and says they don't know when they'll get more, it's gotta be a problem.
