No shit.

We have used it a few times to get rid of a few less desirable employees.
That's included in the job application for most jobs. The fine print above where you sign or on the back. You lie or exclude information on application or have legal issues, your job is up for review and possible termination.

EVERY BUSINESS with more than a few employees does it.

I don't understand the shock about the NFL doing what every other business does.

Well a normal business wouldn't fire you for 6 weeks and then say, oh ok, you can come back.

Either you're a moral authority, or you're not. Either it's about your bottom line, or its not.

Fair point...however, the talent pool for your average employer is slightly larger than the NFL's.

That's different as it protects the children in the school and their first obligation is to protect them regardless of the charges being true or false. It's not the same with football, as it's not only all men being physical being able to be physical is what is wanted. There's no women to beat up out there.

I see the NFL as a quasi-govt entity with stadium subsidized by state and municipal governments and antitrust privileges. Can't say it's fully private or free-market institution.

Before taking over the NFL Goodell spent his entire career as a faceless bureaucrat. Not surprising he's the son of a senator. Thus, Goodell efforts have been to construct an internal judicial system like a federal regulatory agency, where Goodell acts as prosecutor, judge, jury as well as an appeals court over any perceived infraction a la FTC. Even the term “commissioner” fits quasi-governmental entity over "CEO" of a corporation or trade association. Goodell is aligning the culture of the NFL towards the state. I don't care for that.

Charges or convictions? Again, I see those as directly related to the trust needed for that job. I can't see DV accusations affecting one's role as a football player. Twenty percent of the players have criminal events in their past and the NFL has known it.

Quasi govt entity subsidized with govt money. That is one difference between the NFL and a truly private business.

What happens if a player has a crazy gf who tries to get back at the player for denying her something by inflicting wounds upon herself and then calling the cops and accusing him of domestic violence? Shit like that happens more often than you think to richer guys.

Oh they are. And I have trouble with that. Then again if someone wants to put themselves out there like that, that's on them too.

I really think business go too far if they ask for your password for FB or social media. I think that deserves to be a protected.

That's how I see it. I mean how many people go around falsely charging someone with embezzlement. If that's false, and a person loses their job I see a defamation suit right there with damages for lost income.

I'll make it simple.

NFL = Entertainment.

NFL $$ = advertisers.

Advertisers don't like domestic violence. They really don't like it when it is caught on camera.

To appease the advertisers the NFL has to publicly uphold its "image" so it will punish those that commit DV so that it doesn't risk the chance of getting a public black eye and losing potential advertisers.

When you play in the NFL you agree to give up certain rights the average Joe has and you agree to do certain things for the "team" and "league". If you don't like it, there is always the CFL.

NFL=taxpayer funded stadiums and special privileges from federal govt.

Not apples verus oranges.

NFL may loses advertisers...but they will also lose talent.

Don't see what the animosity is over?

A severe punishment like this is sure to make players think twice before throwing hay makers at their respective partners.

Huge problem is, 9 times out of 10, the cops are going to believe the woman's side of the story.

These days yes. Thank OJ case for that. It wasn't always true in the past. I read over 40% of men have engaged in some hitting or beatings of their wives.

I honestly, don't think they can all help it. In the throes of a heated fight in particular. Look what the ex-wife of Tiger Wood's was capable of when she damaged his car with what was it...golf clubs or something.
