Let's talk defense

Where does everyone think this defense will rank at the end of the season?

Will we have more success stopping the run?

Will the secondary be lit up like a Christmas tree on a regular basis without Peters?

Let's discuss it all in here.

I still think the defense is going to be soft.

I don’t give a **** who they got. They’re still gonna suck with that pussy soft a** passrush of theirs. I expect QBs to have all day to throw and shred this defense. Sutton of course will continue to go with a 3 man rush with lots of nickel & dime packages while dropping guys back. Imbalance of playcalling favoring defending the pass instead of the run will continue to allow teams to counter with the run. So yeah they will get run a lot and at will. Leveon Bell will shred us still.

I expect the same old bullsh*t. Chiefs don’t have the brain trust to be creative nor adapt the defensive playcalling according to the flow of the game.

The fact that the Chiefs/Veach have called out the defense as "soft" and require a new "mindset" is a step in the right direction.

DL lost Bennie Logan and Rakeem Roches, but added Xavier Williams and drafted Breeland Speaks (should play DE and OLB) and Derrick Nhadi. I think that’s an obvious upgrade to the DL.

ILB lost DJ, Ramik Wilson and Kevin Pierre Lewis...but added one of the better young ILBs in the game in Anthony Hitchens. I was vocal about hoping we could bring him here and am excited to see him in red. He’s a tone setting 3 down backer. We also drafted DOD and re-signed Terrance Smith. Just going from the ghost of DJ to a young Hitchens is a big upgrade. I think it’s obvious the ILBs are upgraded.

OLB losses the ghost of Tamba Hali and adds Breeland Speaks, a fully healthy Houston, the second year of Passagnon, a healthy Ford (hopefully) and this position group is easily upgraded from last year.

Safety gets all pro Eric Berry back and has great competition at the other safety spot. Golden was an underrated signing and if Watts can learn to tackle, Murray might not even make the team. We might cut/trade Sorensen because this group has good depth and Sorensen is a bit overpaid. Just getting Berry back upgraded the position group.

CB is the spot I can see we possibly downgraded. I’m a big MP fan and think the defense is going to really miss him and I hate the Amerson signing...but in reality if you count Fuller and Peters as a wash, the group is either the same or upgraded.

Lost
Peters
Gaines (addition by subtraction)
Acker
Mitchell (underrated loss)
Baxter

Added/still have
Kendall Fuller
Stephen Nelson
David Amerson
Tremon Smith
Keith Reasor
Will Redmond

The interesting part about this position group is I think Veach has a good eye for talent and he passes on a ton of good talent at CB in the draft and mentioned Reasor and Redmond as reasons why in an interview. I like the gamble and vote of confidence in those two.

If he’s right, the CBs are upgraded, if not, Amerson will get toasted early and often and his replacements won’t fair any better and that spot will kill the defense.
Why would you hate the Amerson signing? He was one of the top-rated CBs in the league 2 years ago and we got him on a 1-year prove it deal. This defense was AWFUL last year. WITH Marcus Peters. The front end of the defense required drastic measures. That’s what people should be worried about. If a bunch of these front 7 guys don’t pan out, that’s going to be the real issue. Quite frankly if Hitchens plays up to his own standard and O’Daniel pans out, the defense could be dramatically improved just with those two moves alone.

IMO Amerson is trash. I’ve never watched a game where he wasn’t the targeted guy in the secondary and burnt consistently.

I think that same things gonna happen in KC. He’s gonna be the weakest link in the chain.

That's how I feel too. Although this will be no different than last year with Gaines, right?

He CAN'T be worse than Gaines.

Right?

He’s better than Gaines (not by much) but I think Terrance Mitchell is better.

The fact Veach tried to sign Kyle Fuller to an offer sheet tells me he’s not sold on Amerson, either.

He played for the Raiders and their pass rush, even with Mack, was terrible. Comparing him to Gaines isn’t even logical. The guy rated as one of the best CBs in the league by PFF. That isnt “trash” when you go from first to worst. That’s a transitory issue. There’s just as much reason to believe he can play like he did 2 years ago as there is he will play like he did last year.

I'm optimistic but also realistic.

I think if we can get a legit pass rush from someone other than Houston our secondary will be much better than last year. It will be the weak area of our defense but not as bad as last year.

Amerson absolutely needs a solid pass rush for him to be a respectable no 2 CB...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The Dline should be fine but is nothing special.

The linebackers should be pretty good.

The secondary is really an unknown because of the corners.

I trust Fuller to play like a #1 CB and Nelson is a fine #3CB but the rest is just a big question mark.

All in all, this looks like an average defense but with the potential to be above-average IMO.

I am sure Veach has a plan in mind as for the corners. He has a list of potential players to acquire if our corners don't show up well in training camp and preseason.

This season is a transition season. So many changes in starters that it's a complete mystery on how we will fare. Up and down most likely.

We can’t rule out this supplemental draft coming up Wednesday. I think Veach takes a CB with one of our picks knowing that he has an extra 2nd next year as insurance.

Sam Beal might be a Chief and a good one at that.

There’s some smoke going on about the supplemental draft. We could use a 2nd to get that Beal kid. He apparently would have been a 2nd rd talent in the draft.

It’s on Wednesday so we’ll see
