Giant monster and robot movie from Guillermo del Toro, set to hit July 12th of next year. Viral marketing is starting to ramp up today.

Judging it on what it was (spectacle) I give it 7/10.

Too much attempted character development with characters I don't care about. I came to see giant robots and giant monsters fighting.

The sets, the action, and the monster designs were great. The acting and characters were meh, and they got entirely too much screen time 'mehing' it up.

With regards to the sword, from my observation it appeared the sword was newish tech that just came about within the past few years in the time frame of the movie, as Raleigh seemed unaware of it when Mako used it and he was a seasoned mark III pilot. Also, the Kaiju that were sent in were designed to learn humanities attack strategies, so perhaps the powers that be wanted to keep the sword a secret from the Kaiju hive mind and have it be sort of a last resort.

Again just my opinion from what I've read and saw. What I can't figure out is why they didn't combine a synergy of forces to defeat the Kaiju, like combining air support with the ground Jaegers. I think this would have been much more effective and safer.

I wonder if Rinko Kikuchi (hot actress from giant robot movie) is related to Shunshuke Kikuchi (music composer who did a lot of anime work).

The film was decent.
The action was HUGE. Hard to imagine ever seeing action on that scale again.
It was so big, in fact, there were times when it was hard to follow.

It was also derivative. Felt like an amalgam of all your favorite _______ threatens the world films.

It was meh. Some of the plot was groan inducing bad. I thought the idea of giant robots and monsters would totally outweigh that, but sometimes it really brought the movie down. I was disappointed that they forced a robot monster fist fight so often. Come on.... robot weapons guys, come on....

A very fun film. Not flawless... but very fun. probably give it a B+. Somewhat reminiscent of Godzilla meets Ghostbusters. I might go see it again in 3D.

By the way, there are a lot of good one-liners in this movie and many of them can easily lend themselves to drinking games. Where would you rather die? Here? Or drinking Jaeger?!

I'm sure Del Toro had his reasons for chumping the Chinese and Russian Jaegers. I read he wanted to include a Mexican Jaeger with ex-convict pilots but the idea was cut because he was having trouble juggling all the plots and getting the right characters development time. Fun idea though, maybe in the sequel.

It was so superfluously dumb that they even gave the robots hands and shit in the first place. They kept punching the aliens to basically no effect. Here they are duking it out old school style for 5 minutes only to whip out some chest missiles or a plasma cannon. When they whipped out the sword that cut through the flying alien like butter, I literally laughed out loud. Why the **** wouldn't you lead with that!?! ... But if they killed the aliens right away, there would be no movie so it's cool. Just something funny I was thinking about.

Come on.... robot weapons guys, come on.... Spoiler! The badass 3 armed Crimson guy whips out those killer rotating Krull blades, and lasts about 30 seconds? Come on. Don't show us the "Best of the best" robots, and build them up for 30 minutes, just to show them get defeated in record time. Can't we see some of the ass kicking ability that made them the best before they get quickly trounced? More fights, less drama bullshit.. __________________
